Choose a hard-water jug by its cartridge: compare BRITA Limescale Expert, Aarke Pure and Aqua Optima Evolve+, with refill limits and practical trade-offs.
What makes a jug suitable for hard water?
The useful question is which filter media address your hardness concern. A larger jug or a glass body does not, by itself, remove more hardness. Start with your water supplier’s local hardness information, then read the exact refill specification. Chlorine taste, kettle deposits and a preference for glass are three different purchase priorities.

The compact Marella holds 1.4 litres filtered within 2.4 litres total. Its appeal here is access to a dedicated hardness-focused MAXTRA PRO option, rather than an unusually large reservoir. BRITA positions Limescale Expert for hard to very hard water. Its claim of 50% better limescale reduction than Pure Performance is a manufacturer comparison; it does not establish superiority over Aarke or Aqua Optima.
The linked Marella bundle includes Pure Performance, so a purchase of that bundle alone does not give you the Limescale Expert combination discussed here. Allow for the separate refill pack when comparing the starting cost. If you already own a compatible MAXTRA PRO jug, buying another container may add nothing useful.

Aarke Purifier with Pure: the refillable glass route
Choose Pure granules for this use. Aarke’s official comparison says Pure reduces limescale, while Enriched does not. Choosing an expensive glass jug and then ordering the wrong refill defeats the purpose of a hard-water purchase. The standard Purifier has only 1.18 litres filtered capacity, so it favours smaller pours rather than filling several large bottles together.

These are maximum instructions, not promised life in every postcode. Replace at the earlier applicable limit and follow the pack’s hardness-specific advice. A rating in litres alone does not tell you how many weeks a refill will last in a busy kitchen.
At four litres a day, a 150-litre rating would take 37.5 days to reach, but the four-week MAXTRA PRO limit arrives first. An Evolve+ reaches its 100-litre limit in 25 days at that use. This is arithmetic using stated limits, not an independent estimate of scale protection. A change in the local water or an earlier replacement instruction can shorten either period.
Build a budget around your actual kettle and drinking-water use
Count all the water you expect to filter, including tea, coffee and cooking. Divide the current delivered refill-pack price by the number of usable doses. For Aarke, a refill bag is a dose; the steel shell is retained. For MAXTRA PRO and Evolve+, count cartridges. Compare like-for-like packs before assuming a jug-and-filter bundle is the cheapest long-term route.

Will any water filter jug remove limescale?
No. Read the exact cartridge purpose. Some products focus on taste or mineral enrichment. A jug’s material and total capacity do not establish its hardness-reduction performance.
Which BRITA cartridge is the starting point for hard water?
BRITA positions MAXTRA PRO Limescale Expert for hard to very hard water. It fits the MAXTRA PRO jug family, but check your own model and the selected refill pack.
Are Aarke Pure and Enriched equally suitable for scale?
No. Aarke’s comparison lists limescale reduction for Pure and says Enriched does not reduce limescale. Choose by the purpose of the refill, not just the Aarke name.
Does a six-pack guarantee six months of use?
No. Time and litre limits apply to each cartridge. High consumption, local hardness or the pack instructions can require earlier replacement. Four weeks also differs from a calendar month.
Will one of these jugs soften my whole home?
No. They treat water poured through the jug. Taps, showers and appliances using the untreated supply remain outside that treatment path.
