How to clean a water filter jug: body, funnel, lid and indicator
Clean the body, funnel, lid and indicator correctly. Includes BRITA Memo and Smart Light exclusions, Flow hand-washing and when to replace the cartridge.

Which parts of a filter jug can you wash?
The body, upper funnel, lid and replacement reminder do different jobs and may need different cleaning methods. A jug described as dishwasher-safe can still have an excluded electronic component or lid. Identify the exact model and separate the permitted removable parts before deciding what belongs in the machine.
Remove the cartridge and keep it away from washing-up liquid, dishwasher detergent and cleaning chemicals. Washing a sealed cartridge with detergent is not a media-renewal procedure. If the cartridge is due, remove it for the appropriate recycling or disposal route and prepare a fresh one after cleaning.
| Part or model | Manufacturer guidance | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| BRITA body and funnel covered by manual | Hand wash or dishwasher up to 50°C | Flow is excluded |
| BRITA Flow | Hand wash with cold or lukewarm water | Do not inherit another jug’s dishwasher permission |
| Lid with non-removable BRITA Memo | Hand wash | Do not prise out Memo for routine cleaning |
| Removable BRITA Smart Light | Remove; wipe with soft damp cloth | Indicator must not go in dishwasher |
| BRITA Glass funnel seal | Detach; refit when thoroughly dry | Follow the Glass model instructions |
| Specified Aqua Optima jug models | Manufacturer FAQ permits dishwasher cleaning | Check model and lid placement; cartridge stays out |
The Aqua Optima FAQ names Oria, Liscia, Daisy and Perfect Pour jug models and gives top-rack placement for lids. That permission should not be extended to every dispenser or appliance bearing the brand. Glass-bodied Aarke and PHOX systems also need their own component instructions.
A practical cleaning sequence for the vessel
- Identify and separate. Empty the jug, remove the cartridge and take apart only the components the model allows you to remove. Keep small indicator parts secure and away from children.
- Choose the permitted method. For hand-washable vessel parts, BRITA describes warm soapy water and a sponge. Use a soft cleaning surface rather than an abrasive scourer. For dishwasher use, observe the model’s temperature and component exclusions.
- Clean the water-contact surfaces. Reach the body, funnel, lid underside and pouring area without forcing inaccessible mechanisms apart. With a supported BRITA PerfectFit funnel, the manual describes turning it over and briefly flushing the mechanism with tap water; Flow is excluded from this instruction.
- Rinse and inspect. Remove cleaning residue from the washable parts. Look for remaining deposits, damaged edges or a seal that needs attention under the manual’s guidance.
- Reassemble correctly. Dry any seal or part that the instructions require to be dry, refit the funnel and lid, then prepare and install a fresh cartridge if one is due. A working display reset belongs to the real media change, not the wash.
Use a clean working surface for removed parts rather than a sink containing food residue. A familiar routine is easier to repeat if you know which components stay dry, which are hand-washed and which can go through the chosen dishwasher programme. Keep the manual available for the particular version you own.
Memo and Smart Light need different handling
A non-removable Memo is part of a hand-wash-only lid. BRITA’s manual describes prising Memo out for end-of-life disposal, not as a routine washing step. Do not remove it with a screwdriver simply to make the lid fit a dishwasher programme.
A removable Smart Light is different. In the cited manual, it turns counter-clockwise out of the lid before cleaning. Clean the indicator with a soft damp cloth and keep it out of the dishwasher. Follow the manual to reinstall it securely. Removing an indicator is a care step; it does not itself mean a new cartridge has been fitted.
If the display is blank or damaged, use the indicator guide to distinguish activation from a fault. BRITA’s customer-care route is the appropriate place to ask about a matching replacement indicator. Buying a whole new jug is not automatically necessary because its reminder has stopped working.
How often should you clean the jug?
BRITA’s manual says to clean before first use, at every filter change and regularly during use. It does not provide one universal weekly schedule for every possible jug and household condition. Build a routine around the model’s instructions and the condition of the water-contact parts rather than waiting for a cartridge reminder to reveal dirt.
Cleaning and cartridge replacement remain separate. A washed body does not restore exhausted media, while a fresh filter does not remove residue from the lid or spout. Keep both tasks on the household’s maintenance record, especially when several people use the same jug.
For limescale, consult the exact model’s approved care guidance before applying a descaler. Do not invent a vinegar concentration, bleach soak or mixed-cleaner recipe for a lid with electronics or a sealed filter. A removable glass-jug seal also needs the correct reassembly: BRITA recommends reattaching that seal only after it is thoroughly dry.
If there is persistent slime, growth, an unusual smell or contamination that normal care does not resolve, stop using the affected assembly and ask the manufacturer how to restore or replace it. This is a different situation from a small amount of new-cartridge carbon residue, covered in the black-specks guide.
Fit a fresh cartridge when the schedule or condition requires it
For a supported MAXTRA PRO jug, the following is a compatible-family refill option when the existing cartridge is due. It is not a cleaning product and need not be bought merely because you washed the vessel. Check the original fitting record and the current pack instructions before deciding whether a change is needed.

Check the MAXTRA PRO family against your jug instructions. It is not a replacement for BRITA Classic, MicroDisc or ON TAP cartridges.
Complete the MAXTRA PRO preparation and fitting sequence before drinking from a freshly installed filter. An Evolve+ cartridge follows its own preparation sequence, even if used in a supported other-brand vessel.
Check that the lid closes normally, the funnel sits correctly and no part is loose after reassembly. Use fresh cold drinking water and follow the fridge-storage guidance. If the cartridge age is unchanged, retain the original reminder record rather than awarding it another full interval.
A steel gravity tank has a different cleaning routine. Use the gravity housing guide and keep its ceramic candles out of the soapy housing wash.
Common questions
Can I put the cartridge in the dishwasher with the jug?
No. Remove the filter before washing vessel parts. A dishwasher or detergent wash is not a preparation or renewal method for sealed cartridge media.
Can a BRITA Memo lid go in the dishwasher?
The cited BRITA manual says to clean a lid with non-removable Memo by hand. Do not prise out the display for routine washing.
What should I do with Smart Light before washing?
Remove the removable Smart Light as its manual directs, keep it out of the dishwasher and clean it with a soft damp cloth. Clean the lid under its separate instructions.
Can Flow be washed like a compact BRITA jug?
BRITA’s current manual excludes Flow from dishwasher cleaning and specifies hand washing with cold or lukewarm water.
Does washing the jug mean I should reset the indicator?
Reset after an actual fresh cartridge change. Cleaning the vessel alone does not restart the existing cartridge’s time or volume allowance.
