Choose between a jug, tap filter and under-sink system
A tap-mounted filter can remove the need to fill a separate jug. An under-sink system keeps its cartridge out of view. Both introduce fitting requirements, and neither should be chosen on the assumption that every product removes the same substances.
If refilling is only an occasional inconvenience, a larger jug or dispenser may be the simpler change. If filtered water is used throughout the day, compare installation and consumable costs as well as the convenience at the tap.
Start with jug versus tap-mounted versus under-sink filtration for the practical differences before comparing individual models.
Check a tap-mounted filter before buying
Check the exact model's fit chart before buying. The BRITA ON TAP Pro V-MF manual shows outlet shapes and tap types that do not fit, including pull-out and spray designs. A round-looking tap body does not prove that its outlet or thread accepts the supplied adapter.
Measure the outlet and clearance around the sink. Make sure the filter will not obstruct a useful working space or make a shallow basin awkward. Check how filtered and unfiltered modes are selected, and follow the model's water-temperature limits.

- ON TAP V / V-MF
Good forAvoiding a separate jug on a compatible tap.
Watch forAdded bulk at the outlet and no hardness reduction.
Choose it only after checking the outlet and supplied adapters. Pull-out or spray taps need particular attention to the fit chart; the filter is not a limescale solution.
BRITA’s ON TAP guidance separates the manual-reminder ON TAP V from the digital Pro model. Neither should be bought to reduce hardness: calcium and magnesium remain in the water.
Use the UK tap-mounted shortlist for model options, the tap-fit guide for threads and exclusions, and ON TAP V versus Pro V-MF for controls and replacements.
Plan an under-sink installation
Choose the outlet and installation route
A system has to fit around the existing pipes, waste fittings and cupboard contents. Allow the clearance needed to remove its cartridge, not just enough space for the assembled unit. Check the rated operating pressure, connectors and whether a separate drinking-water tap or a replacement kitchen tap is required.
For rented accommodation, agree any plumbing or worktop changes with the property owner before arranging work. Use a competent installer for changes to the mains-water plumbing and ask what maintenance you can safely undertake yourself afterwards.
Doulton HIP TRIO · tap & installation bundle
The selected Amazon bundle names HIP TRIO, limescale and fluoride prefilters, a Biotect Ultra ceramic stage, pillar tap and installation kit.
- Position
- Under sink
- Outlet
- Separate pillar tap
- Stages
- 3 filter positions
Good forKeeping filtration hardware off the worktop.
Watch forPlumbing work, tap placement and several consumables.
A dedicated filtered-water branch. Confirm the selected bundle includes all three named filters and the tap; the manufacturer’s configurable base pack differs.
The HIP TRIO manufacturer page describes a ceramic stage plus two pre-filter positions. The selected Amazon bundle names limescale, fluoride and Biotect Ultra stages, a pillar tap and installation kit. Confirm the selected contents, then price all three replacement stages and installation.

Compare complete filter-tap systems
A replacement kitchen tap changes the outlet arrangement as well as the filter. Confirm the selected tap, filter head, pressure and installation requirements as a complete system; a separately sold refill is not an installation kit.

Identify every replacement stage
A supplied filter is the start of the running cost. For ON TAP V, the V-MF refill below is a compatible replacement; the exact cartridge determines the filtration specification.
BRITA ON TAP V-MF · 2 pack
A two-cartridge replacement pack for the compatible ON TAP family. Keep the V-MF name alongside the system model when comparing refill listings.

Good forKeeping the tap filter supplied after its initial cartridge.
Watch forNot a jug refill; check your system generation.
BRITA lists cross-compatibility with ON TAP V, Pro V-MF and the earlier HF with digital display. It excludes ON TAP versions from before 2019.
For HIP TRIO, the Biotect Ultra below renews the ceramic stage only. Confirm the other two cartridges by name and keep access to every housing.
Doulton Biotect Ultra 2501 · M12 refill
The ceramic replacement for compatible Doulton M12 systems, including the HIP TRIO. Buy the exact 2501 type rather than judging by cartridge length alone.

Good forMaintaining the ceramic stage of a compatible installation.
Watch forNot a British Berkefeld gravity cartridge or an M15 refill.
This replaces the ceramic element; it does not renew the HIP TRIO’s two separate pre-filters. Follow their own replacement instructions as well.
Use the cartridge cost calculator for one replacement type at a time, using its own limits. An installed system can need several separate consumables.

Decide whether reverse osmosis suits the home
A mains-connected reverse-osmosis installation needs particular attention to its waste outlet and any supplier notification requirements. Ask your water supplier and installer about the rules for your UK nation and the specific installation. United Utilities lists reverse-osmosis units among notifiable installations. Approved-contractor exemptions and procedures vary, so confirm the route with your own supplier before work starts.
Before considering any installed system, use our water and care guidance to be clear about the reason for filtering. Then compare the named reduction claims and maintenance obligations for the exact model.
Before choosing a membrane system, compare under-sink carbon with reverse osmosis and check the exact certification claim.

For installation rules, use the Water Regs UK guidance alongside your own supplier and installer. A rule for one supplier’s area is not a substitute for confirming your location.
Find the cause of leaks and low flow
Work from the symptom and the exact model, rather than replacing several parts at once. For a leak, isolate the supply as directed before opening a joint; seek an installer if the connection or shut-off is uncertain. Do not work around an active electrical or plumbing fault to keep filtering.
- Tap-filter adapter leaks: seals, alignment and when to stop.
- Slow tap-filter flow: filtered versus unfiltered flow and cartridge checks.
- Low under-sink flow: cartridge, pressure and plumbing checks.
Routine replacement is covered separately in the ON TAP cartridge change guide. A new cartridge cannot correct a mismatched adapter, unsuitable operating pressure or damaged fitting.
Questions about tap and under-sink systems
Will a tap-mounted filter fit any kitchen tap?
No. Check the outlet, adapters and model fit chart before buying. Pull-out and spray taps need particular attention, and clearance around the sink matters too.
What should I check before buying an under-sink system?
Confirm the connection, pressure requirements, cupboard access and drinking-water outlet with the installer. Identify every replacement stage and check the selected bundle contents.
Does changing one ceramic element renew every filter stage?
No. A multi-stage system can contain separate pre-filters with their own purposes and replacement schedules. Keep a record of each stage rather than treating one refill as a whole-system renewal.
Is a filter tap the same as a tap-mounted filter?
No. A tap-mounted unit attaches to a compatible existing outlet. A filter tap is installed as part of a plumbed system, with its own outlet arrangement and connections.
Should I buy a new cartridge for any low-flow problem?
Identify whether the restriction affects filtered water alone, the ordinary tap or other outlets. Use the model-specific troubleshooting guide; a cartridge change does not fix a closed valve, damaged seal or supply issue.
