Why is my gravity water filter slow? Water level, trapped air and blocked ceramic
Diagnose slow British Berkefeld gravity filtration separately from a weak tap: conditioning, water level, trapped air in new candles, fouling and replacement.

Is filtration slow, or is dispensing slow?
Start by locating the water. A lower chamber that already contains plenty of filtered water indicates a different problem from one that remains nearly empty while the upper chamber stays full. Do not buy replacement candles until those two situations have been separated.
If the lower reservoir is full but the glass fills weakly, check the tap path, valve position and any permitted cleaning or fitting checks. If water is not reaching the lower reservoir, look at the candles, upper level, conditioning and service history. Always empty the vessel before dismantling a component.
| Symptom | Investigate first |
|---|---|
| Plenty of water below; weak outlet | Tap operation, permitted cleaning and fittings |
| New candles; little water below | Correct installation and complete cold-water conditioning |
| Flow tails off as the top empties | Reduced water head and wetted ceramic area |
| Gradual decline after normal use | Surface fouling and candle age/capacity |
| Abruptly very fast after maintenance | Possible bypass at a candle or unused position |
A quick pour from stored water does not establish fast filtration, and a slow pour does not automatically mean exhausted media. Separating these stages makes the next check more useful and avoids scrubbing a perfectly serviceable candle to solve a tap issue.
New candles: wetting and trapped air need the correct routine
Doulton explains that a new dry ceramic has pores that need to flood with water before flow stabilises. That can be described as trapped air or incomplete wetting, but it is not permission to borrow an air-lock fix from a pressurised under-sink filter or another gravity brand.
Check that protective packaging has been removed, the correct candle grade is fitted and the threaded mounts, washers and wing nuts follow the diagram. Unused positions must be properly blanked. Do not loosen a sealing washer to introduce a faster route around the media.
Complete the new-system conditioning sequence, including the discarded first water and per-candle flushing. The system manual says maximum normal flow is usually reached after two or three chamber fills. That saturation period is separate from a claim that the first usable glass should appear instantly.
Do not force water into the outlet under mains pressure, use hot water, drill a ventilation hole or repeatedly remove seals to chase a faster rate. Those are not the cited gravity-system conditioning instructions. If ordinary preparation fails, keep the exact model and candle code ready when contacting Doulton.
Low upper water level naturally slows the process
Gravity provides the driving pressure. As the upper chamber empties, there is less water head above the candles and less of their surface may be immersed. Some slowing towards the end of a fill is therefore different from a constant severe restriction with a suitably filled upper tank.
The manufacturer gives approximately one litre per hour per conditioned candle as a guide, with conditions affecting results. Do not multiply that into a guaranteed daily production figure or treat every drop below it as a fault. Compare like conditions when recording a change in your own system.
Higher upper level can help, but first check the lower chamber has room for the water that will arrive. A nearly full lower reservoir can overflow after an apparently sensible top-up. There is no basis here for assuming an automatic shutoff between the two chambers.
For a useful observation, record the number and grade of candles, whether they are new or recently cleaned, the approximate upper level and how much lower-tank water accumulated over a known interval. Avoid changing several things at once and mistaking the result for a controlled product speed test.
Established candles: check fouling and replacement limits
A gradual decline after a normal period can reflect particles collecting on the ceramic surface. Use the gentle candle-cleaning guide if the candle is within its service life and otherwise suitable. Protect the outlet, use no soap or detergent, and refit with correct seals.
British Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl 8674, two-pack
Two British Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl ceramic gravity candles, with the documented 8674 identity; a replacement pair for a correctly matched system.
- Identity
- 8674 / W9121226
- Pack
- 2 gravity candles
Good forReplacing a confirmed Ultra Sterasyl pair.
Watch forNot Biotect Ultra; do not mix with Ultra Fluoride.
Choose for the confirmed gravity housing and same-grade configuration. Cleaning may restore flow but does not reset the replacement schedule.
Surface cleaning may restore flow but does not regenerate the internal media. Keep the original start month and capacity record. Doulton’s six-month recommendation and any earlier applicable limit still matter even if the candle looks clean after brushing.
A damaged candle, suspect seal or unusual change in the water is a reason to stop and investigate. Do not continue indefinitely through repeated aggressive cleaning. A sudden dramatic increase after maintenance may also require a bypass check, rather than being accepted as proof of excellent performance.
More candles and a new tap solve different problems
Some supported housings can take more candles, but an extra position is not a universal upgrade route. Check the exact body, same-grade configuration, blanking arrangements and relevant performance scope before adding any. More installed candles also means more replacements at a complete change.
British Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl 8674, four-pack
Four British Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl gravity candles, useful as a complete change for an approved four-position configuration.
- Pack
- 4 gravity candles
- Grade
- Ultra Sterasyl
Good forAn approved four-candle configuration.
Watch forNot a four-year supply or a universal capacity upgrade.
Confirm the housing supports four candles. More installed candles increase the number needing replacement and do not transfer a two-candle certification scope.
A four-pack is relevant to an approved four-candle arrangement, not a reason to modify an unsupported tank. Do not transfer a two-candle certification or service-capacity statement automatically to that new configuration. A larger chamber alone also does not increase the number of candles supplied.
British Berkefeld stainless-steel gravity tap
The named British Berkefeld steel replacement tap specified for its 6L, 8.5L and 12L stainless gravity vessels.
- Fits
- 6L / 8.5L / 12L
- Excludes
- 1L personal system
Good forA matched tap replacement.
Watch forConfirm seal and fitting contents; no improvised adapters.
Relevant for an identified damaged or unsuitable tap after checking its seals and assembly. It does not change the filtration rate through ceramic candles.
The matched steel tap is relevant when dispensing remains poor after appropriate tap checks or the original component is damaged. It does not bypass a slow ceramic stage. For unexplained continuing restriction, provide Doulton with the observations above instead of improvising pressure or ventilation changes. Use leak diagnosis if the symptom includes water outside the normal path.
Common questions
How fast should a British Berkefeld gravity filter run?
Doulton gives about one litre per hour per conditioned candle as an approximate guide. Water level, condition and installed configuration affect the actual rate; it is not a guaranteed timed output.
Why is a new candle slow?
Its pores need to wet and the ceramic needs to saturate. The system instructions say maximum normal flow is usually achieved after two or three chamber fills, following the prescribed preparation.
Should I add more water to speed it up?
Higher upper water level can improve head pressure, but only add water when the lower tank has room for it. Repeated top-ups into a nearly full lower reservoir can cause overflow.
Will a faster tap make the candles filter faster?
No. A tap can improve dispensing from water already stored below; it does not increase the treatment rate through the ceramic above.
Can I clear trapped air by pressure-priming or drilling a vent?
Do not improvise those methods. Follow the cold-water conditioning and assembly instructions for the exact system, and ask Doulton if persistent low flow remains unresolved.
