GROHE Blue cartridge compatibility: S, M and L sizes and specialist filters

Match GROHE Blue cartridge codes, head and appliance generation; compare conditional S/M/L capacities, specialist filters, service space and replacement limits.

Identify the appliance, filter head and complete cartridge code

Start with the installed equipment rather than the word Blue on a packet. Record the appliance model, filter-head identity and existing cartridge code. Blue Pure, Blue Home, Professional and Red describe different arrangements, and an older head or control unit may have different instructions from a current starter set.

The S 40404001, M 40430001 and L 40412001 cartridges are not interchangeable merely because they use the same brand. Check the named system, head generation, physical space and capacity programming together. The Blue Pure buying guide explains the difference between starting a system and buying a replacement for one already installed.

A cartridge marked compatible by a marketplace seller still needs to match the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact equipment. Similar height, a common thread or the ability to begin turning it into a head is not sufficient evidence. Do not force a cartridge, add an improvised adapter or leave a locking arrangement partly engaged.

Compare S, M and L under the same capacity conditions

GROHE’s cited UK catalogue gives 600 litres for S, 1500 litres for M and 2500 litres for L at 20°dKH. Keep that carbonate-hardness condition attached to the numbers. These are not unconditional replacement intervals, and a capacity comparison using different hardness conditions can give the wrong impression of value.

S-size replacement

GROHE Blue S-size 40404001 · 1 cartridge

The S-size Blue replacement cartridge for the specified matching head, with taste and carbonate-hardness treatment.

Watch forA shared Blue name does not prove that an old head accepts it.

Match the full code, head generation and appliance manual. Its stated capacity depends on the specified water-hardness condition and setup.

More cartridge capacity

GROHE Blue M-size 40430001 · 1 cartridge

A larger-capacity Blue cartridge for a supported system and matching filter-head arrangement.

1500L at 20°dKH; conditions apply
Cartridge / pack
40430001

Good forA supported installation with higher demand.

Watch forDo not infer Blue Home compatibility or physical clearance from the M name alone.

Confirm the exact appliance generation and service space before moving from S to M. Published Blue Home guidance varies between older and newer documents.

M-size needs particular care when researching Blue Home. Older published specifications exclude Home, while newer regional information and the parts list for a named 31454KS1 Home model include M as an option. That is a reason to confirm the actual appliance generation with GROHE, not to publish a universal yes or no for every Home installation.

Supported larger systems

GROHE Blue L-size 40412001 · 1 cartridge

The L-size Blue cartridge offers a larger stated capacity for supported Blue Pure, Professional and Red arrangements.

Good forSupported higher-demand systems with adequate service space.

Watch forNot suitable for Blue Home according to the cited specification.

Choose only after checking the exact head, system and removal space. GROHE explicitly excludes Blue Home in the cited L-size specification.

The cited L-size specification explicitly excludes Blue Home. Do not treat its greater litre figure as an upgrade that can be made by finding more cupboard space. For all sizes, use the supplied cartridge data and the matching system settings, with whichever calendar or volume limit is reached first.

Specialist cartridges change the treatment purpose

Activated carbon 40547001 targets taste and odour, including the specified chlorine concern. It does not provide the same carbonate-hardness reduction as the S/M/L scale-treatment options. It may suit a supported taste-focused arrangement, but a large headline capacity does not make it a substitute when scale reduction is required.

Watch forDo not buy it as an equivalent limescale-reduction replacement.

Consider it where the appliance permits it and the treatment purpose fits. Confirm the separate flow-meter setting rather than carrying over a scale-filter setup.

Magnesium + Zinc 40691002 adds specified minerals as part of its treatment. Its 400-litre reference is given at 17°dGH, a total-hardness condition. Do not silently compare that with 20°dKH carbonate hardness as though both capacity ratings used the same water. The manufacturer’s upper mineral-addition figures are conditional claims, not a measured dose from every glass.

Watch forNot an RO membrane or a universal inline remineralisation cartridge.

Match the exact system and flow-meter setup. Its 400-litre reference uses total hardness conditions, unlike the carbonate-hardness reference for S/M/L.

UltraSafe 40575002 has a separate specification and a maximum six-month use period alongside its stated 3000-litre capacity. Check the exact reduction claim and conditions if that is why you are buying it. A shared connection does not transfer its performance to S, M, L or carbon cartridges, and no cartridge recommendation here establishes suitability for an unsafe or unknown water supply.

Measure the installed cartridge and head together, then the space needed to release and withdraw the cartridge. Check the actual drawing for the supplied version: manufacturer documents from different generations can show different external dimensions. Do not combine the smallest dimension from one document with the largest capacity from another and assume that product exists.

Include the head’s connections, hose bends, locking movement and access to the meter. A cartridge that can be fitted while the cupboard is empty may become difficult to change behind a waste pipe or bin. Record the removal route before paying for a larger size.

When changing filter type, follow the exact instructions for head adjustment and meter or appliance programming. The cited activated-carbon Blue Pure instructions say that a bypass setting is not required for that arrangement and use a 360-day meter setting. Those instructions should not be copied onto a different head or filter type by analogy.

Flush and reset according to the current cartridge and system manuals. Resetting is an administrative step that records replacement; it is not a regeneration cycle. Keep the old code and new packet until the match and first leak checks are complete.

Compare cost per usable litre and calendar life

Divide the current cartridge price by the capacity applicable to your water and setup, then check whether the time limit would arrive first at your demand. If you use two litres a day, twelve months represents roughly 730 litres. You cannot assume a much larger cartridge’s entire rated capacity will be used before its calendar limit.

Keep specialist intervals separate. A six-month product needs two scheduled periods per year under that calendar plan; a 360-day meter setting is not the same as an unlimited litre allowance. Include delivery, supplied filters and any required head or meter changes in the comparison.

Use the cartridge directory to keep unrelated families separate and the running-cost calculator for the arithmetic. Buy greater capacity only where the exact system supports it and the household can use it within the applicable limits.

Common questions

Can I put an L-size cartridge in Blue Home?

The cited GROHE L-size specification explicitly excludes Blue Home. Extra cupboard space or a similar connection is not approval to use it.

Is M-size compatible with every Blue Home?

Do not assume that. Older documents exclude it, while a named Home parts list and newer regional technical information include it. Confirm the exact appliance generation, current instructions and physical installation with GROHE.

Does 600 litres mean the S cartridge always lasts that long?

No. The cited capacity is at 20°dKH carbonate hardness under the stated setup. Water conditions, programmed settings and the applicable time limit affect replacement.

Is activated carbon the same as the S/M/L scale filters?

No. The named activated-carbon option targets taste and odour without the same carbonate-hardness treatment. Verify whether the appliance and your concern suit it.

Does a specialist filter keep the same change reminder?

Not necessarily. UltraSafe has a six-month limit, and the cited carbon instructions use a 360-day meter setting. Programme the exact filter type and follow its current instructions.
