Understand a water concern before shopping

Household water filtration can address preferences such as taste or a practical problem such as kettle scale. It should not begin with an assumption that all UK tap water is unsafe. In England and Wales, the Drinking Water Inspectorate explains why treatment is generally unnecessary to make a compliant mains supply safe.

If the taste, smell or appearance changes unexpectedly, contact your supplier. Check whether the issue affects other taps or neighbours and follow any official advice. Do not cover up a suspected supply or plumbing problem with a new cartridge.

Use do you need a filter in the UK? for the initial decision. The supplier quality-report guide explains how to find local data, what a supply-zone report can tell you and when to contact the supplier about a current change.

Choose treatment for taste, scale or a named claim

  • Taste and odour: activated carbon is commonly used for substances such as chlorine that affect taste. Choose the actual cartridge intended for this job.
  • Limescale: look for a stated carbonate-hardness reduction claim. A household jug does not treat water flowing to the rest of your home.
  • A named contaminant: find evidence for that exact substance, system and cartridge. Broad language about “impurities” does not show which claim has been independently verified.

Avoid treating a low dissolved-solids reading as a general safety certificate. It does not tell you whether a particular pollutant is present or whether a named reduction claim is met. If you need to investigate a specific concern, begin with supplier information and appropriate testing rather than a shopping comparison.

For an existing MAXTRA PRO jug, Pure Performance is the everyday taste option; Limescale Expert is the alternative to compare for hard-water scale. Match the cartridge to the compatible jug first.

For a scale priority

BRITA MAXTRA PRO Limescale Expert · 6 pack

A MAXTRA PRO option for a hard-water kettle-scale priority, without changing a compatible jug or Flow dispenser.

MAXTRA PRO
Limit
150L / 4 weeks

Good forComparing a scale-focused refill for a compatible jug.

Watch forWater conditions can shorten the stated maximum life.

BRITA positions this type for hard to very hard water. It treats the water you filter through the jug; it does not soften the whole household supply.

A tap filter is a different choice: BRITA ON TAP retains calcium and magnesium, so it does not substitute for a scale-focused jug cartridge. For a specific supply concern, use the advice above before shopping.

Check certification and measurement claims

A standard number or logo needs context. Check the exact model, the named reduction claim and the conditions in the certifier's current listing. The NSF drinking-water treatment directory is one place to verify a product that claims NSF certification. A claim about one cartridge does not automatically apply to another cartridge carrying the same brand.

Follow the certification-checking workflow to compare model, cartridge, named claim and listing conditions. Read what a TDS meter can and cannot tell you before using a number to judge drinking-water quality or general cartridge performance.

Clean, store and troubleshoot a jug

Clean the container as its manual directs and replace the cartridge on its own schedule. Cleaning the jug does not reset the filter's service life. Remove or protect the components the manual excludes from dishwasher cleaning, including electronic lids where applicable.

Use the preparation instructions supplied with the new cartridge, including any required rinsing or discarding of initial fills. Record the fitting date and follow the stated time or volume limit. An indicator is a reminder to maintain the product; it is not a laboratory reading of your water.

Regular upkeep

Fitting and troubleshooting

Storage and breaks

Maintain a gravity filter and its candles

Gravity systems have separate care steps for the chambers, tap, seals and ceramic elements. Check the exact candle grade before cleaning; the British Berkefeld manufacturer range distinguishes current system and candle options.

Care for heated chilled and RO appliances

Match the label code and manual before using a cleaning or descaling recipe. Tank washing, flushing and heater descaling are different tasks; a method for a kettle or one Aurora revision is not a general appliance instruction.

Maintain installed filters and diagnose faults

Work from the system model and symptom. Isolate a leaking unit as its instructions direct and use a competent installer where the shut-off, connection or pressure is uncertain.

For tap-mounted routine maintenance, use ON TAP cartridge replacement. For a staged system, record each cartridge and its own schedule.

Choose and budget for the correct replacement

For the Liscia, the refill family is Evolve+. Its preparation and replacement instructions belong to that cartridge, even when another brand of jug accepts it.

Evolve+ replacement supply

Aqua Optima Evolve+ · 6 pack

The Evolve+ replacement family for compatible Aqua Optima jugs and dispensers. Check the device instructions and whether one cartridge or a pair is installed.

Watch forDevice instructions and paired systems can change the replacement calculation.

For a PerfectFit BRITA jug, check the compatibility key is included and follow Aqua Optima’s fit guidance. Do not assume any oval cartridge will work.

For a compatible Doulton installation, cleaning the ceramic element does not renew every filter stage or remove the need for replacement. Follow Doulton’s care guidance for the exact cartridge.

Doulton ceramic replacement

Doulton Biotect Ultra 2501 · M12 refill

The ceramic replacement for compatible Doulton M12 systems, including the HIP TRIO. Buy the exact 2501 type rather than judging by cartridge length alone.

Good forMaintaining the ceramic stage of a compatible installation.

Watch forNot a British Berkefeld gravity cartridge or an M15 refill.

This replaces the ceramic element; it does not renew the HIP TRIO’s two separate pre-filters. Follow their own replacement instructions as well.

Keep the exact cartridge name somewhere you can find it, set a change reminder and store the jug as instructed. If filtering slows, water leaks or a taste persists, consult the model's troubleshooting guidance before assuming that the answer is a different filter.

Our cartridge starting point explains the main replacement distinctions. If you are choosing a first jug, the buying guide brings capacity, fit and cartridge cost together.

Use the running-cost calculator for the applicable time or volume limit, and the compatibility directory before ordering a different family.

Questions about water and filter care

Does a different taste mean my tap water is unsafe?

Taste alone does not establish safety. For a new or unexpected change in taste, smell or appearance, contact your water supplier and follow its advice rather than covering up the issue with a cartridge.

Does cleaning a jug reset the cartridge’s life?

No. The container and cartridge have separate routines. Clean the jug as its manual directs and retain the original cartridge fitting date and replacement limits.

Does a certification logo cover every cartridge from a brand?

No. Check the exact model, named reduction claim and conditions in the current certification listing. A claim for one system or refill does not automatically apply to another.

Can a household jug replace a whole-home water softener?

No. A jug treats water placed in it and only to its stated cartridge claims. It does not soften water flowing to the rest of the home.

Where should I look if the filter starts leaking or slows down?

Choose the troubleshooting guide for the system: jug, gravity, tap-mounted or under-sink. Stop using a leaking installation as its instructions direct and identify the cause before buying parts.
