Leaving a water filter jug unused: holidays, storage and restarting
Plan jug care before a holiday, distinguish BRITA and Aqua Optima cartridge storage, and restart with cleaning, correct preparation and the original filter age.
Decide whether the cartridge will still be within its limit
Check the actual cartridge family, when it was fitted and when you expect to use the jug again. A weekend away near the end of a service interval is different from leaving a newly fitted cartridge briefly. The useful record is the original fitting age and water use, not the number of times the vessel has been refilled.
If the cartridge will be due during your absence, plan to remove it and restart with a fresh supported refill after cleaning. There is little benefit in fitting a new filter immediately before leaving it unused. Keep unopened spares sealed under the maker’s conditions until the next real installation.
Do not leave a reservoir of old drinking water waiting for your return. BRITA’s ordinary filtered-water guidance is cool storage and use within one day; that is not a holiday-preservation method. Empty the vessel and follow the relevant component and cartridge storage instructions.
A break also offers a chance to find the model leaflet and check the condition of the lid, funnel and seals. If a part is already damaged or difficult to clean, arrange the correct remedy rather than expecting the holiday procedure to restore it.

For BRITA, the current manual’s unused-jug note refers the reader to its changing procedure, which includes cleaning, preparation, fitting and indicator setup. It does not give a universal number of holiday days that guarantees an already-used cartridge can return unchanged. If the original limit has passed or the age and condition are uncertain, start with a fresh cartridge.
For Aqua Optima, the FAQ describes a sealed bag and refrigerator storage for the removed filter. On return it says to prepare that filter as you would a new one and flush through twice before use. That preparation instruction is not a statement that the used media receive another full 100 litres or 30 days.
Keep the original service record attached to any filter you intend to reuse under its instructions. If the stored filter cannot be identified, was stored contrary to instructions or is of uncertain condition, ask the maker or choose a fresh supported refill. Do not infer an exact calendar pause that the manufacturer has not granted.
A clear restart routine after an absence
- Discard remaining stored water. Do not mix it with a new batch. Review whether the jug and cartridge were stored by the correct model’s procedure.
- Review the original fitting record. Check the time limit, previous consumption and condition. A rinse or indicator reset cannot make an already-due cartridge new.
- Clean the permitted vessel parts. Use the correct method for body, funnel, lid and reminder. Keep cartridge media away from detergent and follow any required seal-drying or indicator-removal step.
- Prepare the supported filter. Use a fresh cartridge when due, uncertain or otherwise required. Follow the full MAXTRA PRO or Evolve+ preparation instructions; for an Aqua filter reused under its holiday guidance, complete the stated re-preparation and two flushes.
- Resume with a clear record. Reset a reminder for an actual fresh-cartridge change. For a reused filter, retain its original age and remaining limits rather than assigning a new full interval. Use fresh cold water and return to normal storage.
If returning to a jug with visible growth, persistent smell, damaged parts or an unexplained water change, stop and seek the appropriate manufacturer or supplier advice. These are replacement-media choices, not a recommendation to replace an intact jug after every absence. The exact fitting and condition determine what needs changing. If a recent cartridge or part is faulty, a manufacturer or seller enquiry may be appropriate before another purchase.
Unused spares and used wet filters are different things
BRITA’s current FAQ says unopened cartridges should remain sealed in their original packaging, protected from direct sunlight and heat, within its stated storage range. That is different from instructions for a filter already wetted and used. Do not move every sealed spare into a refrigerator simply because Aqua Optima has a holiday procedure for a removed used filter.
Keep the box identity and any applicable storage or pack information readable. Avoid locations beside a kettle, radiator or sunny window. Follow another brand’s own conditions for its unopened media rather than borrowing a BRITA temperature range.

Common questions
Can I leave a full jug in the fridge for the whole holiday?
Do not use ordinary refrigeration as a holiday-preservation method. Empty stored water and follow the exact jug and cartridge break instructions.
Should every used cartridge go in a sealed bag in the fridge?
No. Aqua Optima’s FAQ gives that procedure for its filter. BRITA’s cited jug manual describes a different empty-jug and loose-funnel arrangement.
Does holiday storage pause the replacement countdown?
Do not assume a pause. Retain the original fitting and consumption record; the cited instructions do not grant a new full service interval to reused media.
What if I cannot remember when the old filter was fitted?
After cleaning the vessel, a fresh supported cartridge gives a clear starting record. Do not use an accidentally reset display as proof of the old cartridge’s age.
Do I need a new jug after a holiday?
An intact, cleanable vessel may remain serviceable. Assess the cartridge, lid, funnel and body separately and seek maker advice for damage, growth or persistent contamination.
