Best water filter jugs for UK homes
Compare three practical jug choices by filtered capacity, fridge fit, cartridge family and replacement costs.

The best choice depends on the refill routine
For a first jug, start with the Marella Cool if its dimensions fit your fridge and 1.4 litres of filtered water is enough between refills. Choose the Marella XL when a larger amount ready to pour would be useful, and you have room for its wider body. The Liscia six-filter pack is worth comparing when you want a slim jug and replacement cartridges included from the outset.
These are practical starting points, rather than a claim that one jug wins every filtration task. The cartridge type matters as much as the container. If your main concern is a particular contaminant, make that exact reduction claim part of your selection, with independently verifiable evidence for the precise model and cartridge.
The jug shortlist
BRITA Marella 2.4L
A sensible starting point when a fridge-door jug and a widely stocked cartridge family matter more than a large reservoir.
- Filtered / total
- 1.4 / 2.4L
- Depth
- 10.5cm
- Cartridge
- MAXTRA PRO
Good forFridge-door storage and everyday pours.
Watch forTwo large bottles can mean another refill.
Choose it for a small household; its 1.4-litre filtered capacity means more refills when several people pour at once.
The Cool version has the narrower body of the two Marellas here. That makes it the one to consider first for fridge-door storage, although you still need to measure your shelf. Its flip-top filling lid is useful when refilling little and often.
The limitation is capacity. If two people fill large bottles together, a compact jug may need another cycle before everyone has what they want. Do not buy it on the strength of “2.4 litres” alone: that is its total volume, not the amount of filtered water available in one reservoir.
The Amazon listing linked above is a three-cartridge Pure Performance pack. Compare the selected pack with a single-cartridge jug and separately bought replacements rather than assuming the bundle is always better value.
BRITA Marella XL 3.5L
The larger Marella gives you two litres of filtered water per fill without changing cartridge family.
- Filtered / total
- 2 / 3.5L
- Depth
- 14.8cm
- Cartridge
- MAXTRA PRO
Good forMore water ready to pour between refills.
Watch forA wider, heavier jug; measure the shelf first.
Choose it when refilling is the main irritation, provided the wider body fits your shelf and feels manageable when full.
The XL suits the household that finds a small jug runs out at the wrong moment. Its extra width needs more room, and a full jug takes more effort to handle. Measure the storage position and think about who will lift and pour it.
There is no need to change cartridge family when moving from the Cool to the XL. That can simplify replacement shopping if you already use MAXTRA PRO. It does not give a cartridge extra service life: using more filtered water can bring the volume limit around sooner.
The linked XL listing includes one Pure Performance cartridge. If scale reduction is your main priority, factor the appropriate replacement type into the first-purchase comparison instead of counting every included cartridge as equally useful for your needs.
Aqua Optima Liscia 2.5L
A slim jug supplied in this listing with six Evolve+ cartridges: useful when you want replacement filters in the initial purchase.
- Filtered / total
- 1.2 / 2.5L
- Depth
- 10cm
- Cartridge
- Evolve+
Good forA slim body and replacements in the first order.
Watch forIts 1.2-litre filtered reservoir may mean another refill.
Choose it for its cartridge bundle and slim body, rather than for maximum ready-to-pour capacity. Compare the whole pack at checkout.
The Liscia is slim, but its filtered capacity is the smallest of this shortlist. It suits modest amounts at a time better than several large bottles filled in one go. The linked six-cartridge bundle can be convenient for a new user who wants a supply of Evolve+ replacements without a second order.
The useful value comparison is jug plus cartridges, not jug price alone. Check the pack count, cartridge generation and selected seller before checkout. Packaging can change, and the appearance of a product photo is not a reliable record of what a different listing variant includes.
Choose it for that combination of slim size and supplied filters. Do not infer that a different filtering design makes it categorically better at every reduction task. Manufacturer claims need to be compared substance by substance under the stated conditions.
Compare the capacity and cartridge commitment
| Jug | Capacity (filtered) | Size, W × H × D | Filter family | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BRITA Marella Cool | 1.4L | 25.8 × 25.8 × 10.5cm | MAXTRA PRO | A compact everyday fridge jug |
| BRITA Marella XL | 2.0L | 25.8 × 25.8 × 14.8cm | MAXTRA PRO | More filtered water before the next refill |
| Aqua Optima Liscia | 1.2L | 25.6 × 24.7 × 10.0cm | Evolve+ | A slim jug with a six-filter starter bundle |
Capacities and dimensions: BRITA and Aqua Optima. Retailer pack contents can differ from the manufacturer's standard pack; confirm the selected bundle before paying.
Four checks that make the choice easier
Take the usable width, height and depth of the space where the jug will live. Include the clearance needed to take it out and replace it. Fridge-door shelves can be narrower at their base, and bottles beside the jug still need room.
List the things you tend to fill together: glasses, bottles or a kettle. Compare their combined amount with filtered capacity. This is more useful than deciding that the largest total-capacity number must be the best purchase.
For everyday taste, compare the manufacturer's taste-related specification. For carbonate-hardness reduction, check the cartridge intended for that concern. BRITA positions MAXTRA PRO Limescale Expert for hard to very hard water; it is an alternative cartridge choice within that family, rather than a different jug size.
Find the current replacement name, pack availability and preparation instructions before ordering. Our cartridge guide explains the Evolve+ compatibility-key issue and why a similar-looking cartridge is not enough to prove fit.
Work out the cost of keeping it supplied
Start with the current price of the correct cartridge pack and divide by the number of cartridges. Then consider how often you will replace one under the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid treating the maximum litres on a box as the volume every household will achieve.
For MAXTRA PRO, BRITA gives a maximum of 150 litres or four weeks, with local water and consumption affecting life. At two litres a day, four weeks accounts for about 56 litres; at six litres a day, 150 litres arrives after about 25 days. The time or volume limit that arrives first matters to the budget, and harder water can shorten it further.

An ongoing-use estimate over 365 days, using the earlier time or volume limit. Hardness can shorten service life. Round up cartridges when budgeting whole packs; allow separately for the jug, supplied filters, delivery and subscriptions.
Use this method with your own current pack price:
- Cost per cartridge: pack price ÷ cartridge count.
- Planning interval: the earlier applicable manufacturer time or volume limit, allowing for your water conditions.
- Annual replacement budget: cost per cartridge × expected replacements over the year.
- Cost per litre actually used: replacement spend ÷ the filtered litres you expect to consume.
Four-week replacement planning is about thirteen cartridges over a full year, not twelve. Allow separately for the cartridge supplied with a new jug, delivery and any subscription terms. For the Liscia, follow the service-life instructions for the Evolve+ pack you buy; do not transfer BRITA's figures to another brand.
Replacement packs for the shortlisted jugs
For Marella Cool or XL, compare the two MAXTRA PRO types by purpose. For Liscia, use Evolve+. The packs below let you compare a refill purchase with the cartridges included in each jug bundle.
BRITA MAXTRA PRO Pure Performance · 6 pack
The everyday-purpose MAXTRA PRO replacement for compatible BRITA jugs and Flow. Compare this six-pack with the cartridges already included in your chosen starter bundle.
- Pack
- 6 cartridges
- Family
- MAXTRA PRO
- Limit
- 150L / 4 weeks
Good forRestocking a compatible MAXTRA PRO system.
Watch forFour weeks can arrive long before 150 litres.
Check the MAXTRA PRO family against your jug instructions. It is not a replacement for BRITA Classic, MicroDisc or ON TAP cartridges.
BRITA MAXTRA PRO Limescale Expert · 6 pack
A MAXTRA PRO option for a hard-water kettle-scale priority, without changing a compatible jug or Flow dispenser.
- Pack
- 6 cartridges
- Family
- MAXTRA PRO
- Limit
- 150L / 4 weeks
Good forComparing a scale-focused refill for a compatible jug.
Watch forWater conditions can shorten the stated maximum life.
BRITA positions this type for hard to very hard water. It treats the water you filter through the jug; it does not soften the whole household supply.
Aqua Optima Evolve+ · 6 pack
The Evolve+ replacement family for compatible Aqua Optima jugs and dispensers. Check the device instructions and whether one cartridge or a pair is installed.
- Pack
- 6 cartridges
- Family
- Evolve+
- Limit
- 100L / 30 days
Good forMaintaining a confirmed compatible Aqua Optima device.
Watch forDevice instructions and paired systems can change the replacement calculation.
For a PerfectFit BRITA jug, check the compatibility key is included and follow Aqua Optima’s fit guidance. Do not assume any oval cartridge will work.
Aqua Optima specifies 30 days or 100 litres for Evolve+. Select the calculator’s own limits and enter those values instead of leaving the MAXTRA PRO defaults in place.
What a jug can reasonably do
The shortlist is intended for household drinking-water choices. A taste improvement is not proof that a filter has made unsafe water safe, and a limescale claim is not a promise that every dissolved substance is removed.
For a sudden change in your supply, contact your water company. The Drinking Water Inspectorate guidance for England and Wales explains the distinction between a taste preference and a problem that needs investigation. For a named contaminant, check the exact claim against the manufacturer's documentation and a current independent certification listing where certification is claimed.
More specific jug choices
For a narrower decision, compare hard-water cartridge and jug combinations, fridge-door dimensions, glass-bodied systems, or BRITA and Aqua Optima ownership costs. If a larger reservoir is the priority, start with large jugs vs dispensers.
Questions before you order
Will a filter jug fit any fridge door?
No. Use the dimensions in the comparison as a starting point, then measure the space you actually have. A slim jug still needs enough height and room around its handle to lift it out.
Does a larger jug mean a longer-lasting cartridge?
No. It gives you more storage. Cartridge life depends on the filter's stated limits, water conditions and usage. If the larger jug encourages greater consumption, replacement may be needed sooner.
Can I put the whole jug in the dishwasher?
Follow the exact model instructions. For Marella, BRITA excludes the lid. Do not assume that an electronic indicator can be washed in the same way as the body. Clean the container and replace the cartridge as separate maintenance tasks.
Should I buy a dispenser instead?
Consider one if several people need filtered water at the same location and the shelf can support its full weight. Check spout clearance and cleaning access. If refilling remains a frequent interruption, compare tap and under-sink options after checking fit and installation requirements.
