BWT vs BRITA water filter jugs: cartridge choices and ongoing costs

Compare BWT Penguin and BRITA Marella capacity, magnesium-style and MAXTRA PRO cartridges, replacement intervals and realistic annual-cost calculations.

BWT Penguin vs BRITA Marella: compare usable litres first

The standard Penguin and standard Marella are useful examples for this decision because their ready-filtered reservoirs are close in size. BWT gives 1.5 litres filtered within 2.7 litres total. BRITA gives the standard Marella 1.4 litres filtered within 2.4 litres total. Neither total figure is all ready to pour.

A 100ml difference in nominal filtered storage is unlikely to settle every household’s choice. Handle comfort, the space available in the fridge and how easily the lid opens may matter more. The comparison uses named-model documentation and practical ownership calculations.

If several people fill large bottles together, compare a larger vessel too. A change of brand within the same small-reservoir format may not fix frequent refilling. Our large jug vs dispenser guide separates that format decision from filtration chemistry.

Magnesium-style filtration and MAXTRA PRO serve named purposes

BWT describes its magnesium-style jug media as combining taste-related reduction and limescale reduction with a change in mineral balance. Treat that as a cartridge approach, not a reason to assume dietary benefits or a need for added magnesium. A household purchase comparison is not a health recommendation.

BRITA MAXTRA PRO combines activated carbon and ion-exchange media. Pure Performance is the everyday option; Limescale Expert has a different hard-water emphasis. Compare the specific cartridge you intend to use, rather than placing every BRITA product on one side of the table.

For a kettle-scale concern, read the precise limescale purpose and instructions for each option. Neither jug is a whole-home softener: water used elsewhere in the property remains untreated. If the concern is a named substance rather than taste or scale, check exact system evidence instead of relying on “mineral”, “pure” or “advanced” wording.

Do not use a TDS number as the winner’s score. A meter estimates dissolved solids from conductivity and cannot separate calcium hardness from other ions. It also does not assess all reductions made by activated carbon. Our taste vs limescale guide helps define the purchase objective first.

Compare both the volume and the calendar limit

For the BWT oval magnesium cartridge, the manual gives a 120-litre rating under stated hardness conditions and a maximum four-week period. MAXTRA PRO has an up-to-150-litre or four-week instruction. The service limits depend on the stated water conditions and the named cartridge.

At two litres a day, a 28-day interval uses 56 litres. The calendar limit would arrive before either headline volume, assuming no earlier replacement is needed. At six litres a day, 120 litres corresponds to 20 days and 150 litres to 25 days. Those are illustrative calculations using maximum ratings, not guaranteed lives.

Higher consumption, feed-water conditions and the specific pack’s instructions can move the actual change point earlier. Do not extend either cartridge beyond its time limit just because a capacity number has not been reached. Keep supplier hardness figures and their units intact when reading conditional ratings.

BWT’s reusable system has its own shell and dose instructions. It does not turn a sealed four-pack into refillable cartridges. Compare it as a separate ownership route, using the BWT compatibility guide to identify what is being bought.

Running costs: an example using your unit prices

Call the delivered price of one correct BWT sealed cartridge B and one selected MAXTRA PRO cartridge R. Divide the actual pack price by the number of complete cartridges to get those values. Ignore an unrelated crossed-out price or a bundle containing a different cartridge family.

In the low-use example above, annualised replacement demand is about 365 ÷ 28, or 13.04 cartridge-equivalents for either route. The comparison is therefore approximately 13.04 × B against 13.04 × R, before whole-pack rounding and any earlier changes. The headline 120/150-litre difference has not changed this calendar-controlled example.

In the illustrative six-litre-a-day case, annual demand is 2190 litres. At the maximum volume ratings, that is 18.25 BWT cartridge-equivalents against 14.6 MAXTRA PRO cartridge-equivalents. Multiply by your own unit prices. This explains the calculation; it is not evidence of a saving, and shorter practical life would increase the bill.

Use our running-cost calculator for your household inputs. Separate annualised usage from the cash needed to buy whole multipacks. Include the starter jug, its included cartridges and any eventual replacement shell when comparing first-year ownership.

Choose the system you will maintain consistently

Choose the Penguin when its storage, pouring routine and documented BWT cartridge route suit you. Choose a Marella/MAXTRA PRO route when that vessel and the selected Pure Performance or Limescale Expert cartridge fit your needs. Neither recommendation requires inventing a taste-test result.

Check lid and indicator versions, cleaning instructions and the next replacement purchase before ordering. A reminder display is not a measurement of every contaminant, and resetting it does not renew a cartridge. Avoid assuming a control sequence is shared across all jugs carrying one brand name.

For detailed vessel checks, use the Penguin guide or the Marella size comparison. If your actual goal is extensive dissolved-ion reduction rather than these taste-and-scale approaches, compare BRITA and ZeroWater as a different decision.

Common questions

Is BWT Penguin larger than BRITA Marella?

BWT specifies 1.5 litres filtered and 2.7 litres total; the standard Marella is 1.4 litres filtered and 2.4 litres total. Compare overall dimensions and exact versions as well as capacity.

Can I exchange their cartridges?

Do not assume that. Choose the cartridge explicitly specified for the jug and seat. BWT sealed, BWT reusable and BRITA MAXTRA PRO are distinct purchase routes.

Is BWT’s magnesium claim a health recommendation?

No. Here it describes the cartridge’s mineral-exchange approach and product purpose. It is not dietary advice or evidence that everyone needs added magnesium.

Does 150 litres mean BRITA always lasts longer than BWT?

No. At low use both may reach a four-week time limit first. Ratings also have conditions, and actual service may be shorter.

Should I choose using a TDS meter?

No. A TDS display cannot separately measure hardness, chlorine reduction or a particular contaminant. It is not a universal comparison score for these cartridges.
