BRITA Marella vs Marella XL: which size suits your household?

Compare BRITA Marella Cool 2.4L and Marella XL 3.5L by filtered capacity, exact dimensions, handling and replacement cartridges before choosing a size.

Marella Cool vs Marella XL: the specifications that matter

Marella is a model family, so “Marella” on its own is not a complete size description. This comparison uses the compact Cool 2.4L and the XL 3.5L. Their total-capacity labels are easy to spot in a listing, but the lower filtered-capacity figures are more useful for deciding how many drinks you can pour before waiting for more water.

The manufacturer gives both versions the same published width and height. The major physical change is depth: XL is 4.3cm deeper. That difference is substantial on a fridge-door shelf, even though photographs can make the two look very similar. Check the selected size in the listing and on the order summary, especially when several colours share a product page.

The XL adds 0.6 litres filtered, approximately 43% more than Cool’s stated reservoir. It is not a doubling, and it does not turn the 3.5-litre total into 3.5 litres ready to pour. The two compartments serve different purposes: water waits above the cartridge before reaching the lower filtered reservoir.

Choose Marella Cool when storage is the limiting factor

Cool is the more natural starting point for a door shelf or a small household that takes a glass or one bottle at a time. Its shallower body can leave more practical room for other items. That is a dimensional advantage, not a guarantee of fridge fit: door rails, internal curves and the room above the lid still matter.

A sensible starting point when a fridge-door jug and a widely stocked cartridge family matter more than a large reservoir.

Watch forTwo large bottles can mean another refill.

Choose it for a small household; its 1.4-litre filtered capacity means more refills when several people pour at once.

Two 500ml bottles require one litre, within the nominal 1.4-litre filtered reservoir. Two 750ml bottles require 1.5 litres, slightly more than its stated capacity, so plan another filtering cycle. A difference of 100ml can be the difference between a calm routine and waiting at the sink each morning.

A smaller reservoir can also mean less water to carry when filled only with filtered water. However, the exact filled weight includes the vessel, cartridge and any water in the upper section. Consider the vessel, the water in both sections and the whole lifting movement when judging whether the size suits you.

Choose Marella XL when one fill is regularly too small

XL makes sense when a compact jug is frequently empty just when you need it. Its two-litre filtered reservoir provides more nominal capacity for several glasses, bottles or kettle fills together. It keeps the same MAXTRA PRO cartridge family, so owners moving between these Marella sizes do not need to learn a new refill system.

More water per fill

Choose it when refilling is the main irritation, provided the wider body fits your shelf and feels manageable when full.

The extra 0.6 litres of stored filtered water adds approximately 0.6kg of water alone compared with Cool, if both reservoirs are full to their stated filtered capacity. That calculation excludes different vessel weights and water above the cartridge. A larger handle opening or similar outline should not be taken as proof that the XL will feel equally easy to pour.

If you need much more than two litres ready at once, repeatedly moving up one jug size may not solve the problem. Our large jug vs dispenser comparison explains when a fixed serving tap is more useful. The cost is a larger footprint and a different filling and cleaning routine.

Check the shelf, the tap and the washing space

Measure width, height and usable depth at the narrowest points of the intended storage space. Then allow for getting your hand around the handle and lifting the jug past the retaining rail. A shelf that is just 14.8cm deep on a tape measure may still be too cramped for the XL once the door liner or rail is considered.

Use the fridge-door measuring guide if storage is uncertain. Do not assume the Cool’s fridge-door positioning carries over to XL. If the jug will live on a main fridge shelf, check that it can be lifted out without moving food every time.

Both sizes use a flip-top filling lid and Memo reminder. The lid should be treated separately during cleaning: BRITA excludes the Marella lid from dishwasher cleaning. Follow the current manual for the selected jug and keep the indicator dry as instructed. A roomy sink or dishwasher does not remove the need to check which parts can go where.

If the indicator and lid design matter more than extra capacity, compare Marella with Style eco. That is a model-design decision, separate from choosing between the two Marella sizes here.

Memo is a time-based replacement reminder rather than a direct measurement of water quality. Starting a new set of bars does not renew the cartridge or make it suitable for longer use. Change the filter according to the cartridge instructions and reset the reminder after the real replacement.

Compare the bundle without confusing size and filter life

The linked compact listing includes three Pure Performance cartridges, while the linked XL listing includes one. Those pack differences can change the initial value comparison. A higher price for the compact bundle may include more consumables, so do not compare the container price as though both boxes contain the same thing.

At equal daily water use and with the same cartridge type, choosing XL does not extend the filter’s time or litre limit. MAXTRA PRO’s stated maximum is 150 litres or four weeks, with earlier replacement where instructions or conditions require it. A larger vessel mainly changes how often you refill the reservoir.

Use the running-cost calculator for cartridge spending, then add the chosen jug separately to compare your first year. If scale is the problem, see hard-water jug choices: the relevant change may be the cartridge purpose rather than the Marella size. Choose the vessel around your storage and demand, then select the refill around the water issue.

Questions before you buy

Do Marella and Marella XL use the same cartridges?

These MAXTRA PRO Marella versions use the same cartridge family. Check the exact jug instructions if buying an older or differently labelled model.

How much more filtered water does XL hold?

BRITA states two litres filtered for XL and 1.4 litres for Cool: a difference of 0.6 litres, or approximately 43% relative to Cool.

Is the XL taller than the compact Marella?

The manufacturer lists both at 25.8cm high and wide. The stated depth increases from 10.5cm on Cool to 14.8cm on XL.

Will XL fit in the fridge door if Cool does?

That does not follow. XL is deeper, and the door shelf, rail and removal path must be measured separately.

Does XL need more expensive cartridges?

The container size does not change the MAXTRA PRO family. Compare the selected cartridge type and pack price; a different household consumption level can change replacement frequency.
