Glass water filter jugs UK: options, weight and ongoing costs
Compare UK glass-bodied filter jugs from BRITA, Aarke and PHOX, including filtered capacity, refill systems, weight, care and ongoing-cost calculations.

Three glass-bodied jug options in the UK
Buying a glass jug changes the vessel you handle, wash and store. It does not establish superior filtration on its own. The filter media, stated purpose and replacement instructions remain separate decisions. This guide compares three systems with verified Amazon UK product identities and manufacturer documentation, rather than ranking their taste or treatment performance from photographs.
The key split is sealed cartridges versus refillable cartridges. BRITA Glass uses a complete replacement cartridge at each change. Aarke and PHOX retain a shell and take fresh media. Refillable does not mean the same granules can be washed and reused indefinitely, and a glass body does not make a complete jug assembly free of plastics, seals or other materials.
| Model | Filtered capacity | Total or advertised capacity | Refill format |
|---|---|---|---|
| BRITA Glass | 1.5L | 2.5L total | Sealed MAXTRA PRO cartridge |
| Aarke Purifier standard | 1.18L | 2.36L total | Bagged granules in steel filter |
| PHOX V2 | Not separately confirmed | 2.2L advertised | Fresh media in retained shell |
PHOX’s primary V2 page gives the advertised 2.2-litre size without a separately confirmed filtered-reservoir figure. We have therefore not ranked it above the other two on ready-to-pour capacity. If that distinction decides your purchase, ask for the exact specification before ordering.
BRITA Glass: a glass body with a familiar sealed refill
BRITA Glass offers 1.5 litres filtered and a Smart Light reminder. It is useful if the attraction is a glass vessel while retaining the MAXTRA PRO replacement routine. The linked light-blue bundle includes one Pure Performance cartridge. The jug’s material does not turn that cartridge into a different filter type.
BRITA Glass jug 2.5L
A glass-bodied MAXTRA PRO jug with 1.5 litres ready to pour and a Smart Light replacement reminder.

- 1.5 / 2.5L
- W × H × D
- 19.3 × 27.7 × 13.8cm
- Family
- MAXTRA PRO
Good forA familiar cartridge family in a glass container.
Watch forGlass needs careful handling; the whole assembly is not glass.
Consider it if you want a glass body while keeping sealed MAXTRA PRO cartridge changes. Measure its 13.8cm depth before choosing a door shelf.
The published dimensions are 19.3cm wide, 27.7cm high and 13.8cm deep. Compared with slim compact jugs, the depth and height deserve a fresh measuring check. A glass vessel should not be squeezed into a shelf where removal involves repeated knocks against the fridge rail.
BRITA permits dishwasher cleaning up to 50°C except for Smart Light, and specifies removing the funnel seal and reinserting it dry. Follow the current model instructions rather than a generic “dishwasher-safe glass” assumption. We have not verified an empty-weight figure from the primary specification, so we do not quote a guessed full carrying weight.
Aarke Purifier: glass, steel and measured refill bags
The standard Aarke Purifier stores 1.18 litres filtered within a 2.36-litre total. Aarke lists an empty weight of 1.1kg, height of 27.5cm, width including the handle of 17.1cm and body diameter of 12cm. The body diameter is not its complete width, so do not use that smaller number as the only fridge-fit measurement.
Aarke Purifier · standard
The standard glass and stainless-steel model stores 1.18 litres filtered; its reusable filter takes measured refill bags.

- Aarke Pure granules
Good forReplacing granules while retaining the steel cartridge.
Watch for1.1kg empty, before adding water; modest filtered capacity.
Choose for the material and refill routine, provided the smaller ready-to-pour reservoir suits your household. This is not the Large model.
At the stated filtered capacity, water alone adds approximately 1.18kg. Adding that to the published 1.1kg empty weight gives about 2.28kg, excluding any additional water still above the filter. This calculation combines the manufacturer’s empty weight and filtered capacity; allow separately for upper-reservoir water.
Choose the granules for the job. Pure is Aarke’s limescale-reducing option; Enriched has a different mineral and pH purpose and is not listed as reducing limescale in the manufacturer’s comparison. The standard Purifier and Purifier Large are different vessel sizes, so keep their capacities separate when comparing bundles.

Watch forTime and volume limits still apply to refillable systems.
For Aarke Purifier and Purifier Large. Pure is the limescale-reducing option; do not substitute Enriched when scale reduction is the priority.
Our Aarke ownership guide covers refill doses, care and annualised costs. Consider the refill routine and the relatively small filtered reservoir before paying primarily for the materials or appearance.
PHOX V2: keep the cartridge shell and replace the media
PHOX V2 is another glass-bodied route to a refillable system. Its reusable cartridge needs fresh media according to the instructions. The authorised image for the linked Amazon listing shows a Clean refill pack, while its title describes a three-month supply. Confirm the selected refill type and actual contents at checkout, because other PHOX packs serve different purposes.

PHOX positions Clean for moderately hard water, Softener for very or extremely hard water, and Alkaline for a different mineral and pH preference. We do not treat “alkaline” as a health advantage or assume one pack does every job. The stated refill maximum is 200 litres or 45 days per dose, using the earlier limit.

Watch forThree months describes the pack, not one refill dose.
PHOX positions Clean for moderately hard water. Check the refill instructions and selected pack; Softener and Alkaline serve different purposes.
Published primary information consulted here does not establish a precise filtered-reservoir volume, empty weight or complete footprint for V2. That limits direct capacity and lifting comparisons. If you have a tight door shelf or need a particular amount ready at once, verify those measurements rather than substituting figures from the separate PHOX Wave model. Read the PHOX V2 guide for the refill decision.
Compare ownership costs without assuming glass is cheaper
Separate the vessel purchase from recurring media. For a sealed cartridge, divide the delivered pack price by cartridge count. For a refill system, divide by complete usable refill doses, including any required parts specified by that system. Do not divide by the retained shell as though it were replaced every time, and do not count the weight of a bag as several doses unless the instructions say so.
Use custom limits in our running-cost calculator: Aarke Pure is 120 litres and 28 days; PHOX is 200 litres and 45 days. MAXTRA PRO is 150 litres and 28 days. These maxima are not guaranteed service in all water conditions. A cheaper initial jug can cost more in refills, while a dearer vessel can take years to offset any dose-price advantage.
For handling, consider carrying, pouring and washing separately. Glass can break when dropped or knocked; avoid temperature changes and cleaning methods prohibited by the model’s instructions. Check the lid, seal, indicator and cartridge rules individually. An assembly that looks simple may still need several parts removed for cleaning.
Finally, choose a capacity that fits your routine. A beautiful jug that is constantly empty or difficult to grip is a poor match. If material is flexible, compare the compact fridge-door choices too. This shortlist is about glass-bodied ownership options, not proof that glass itself improves the water treatment.
Questions before you buy
Are glass water filter jugs completely plastic-free?
A glass body does not establish that. Lids, seals, indicators and cartridge parts can use other materials. Check the exact complete assembly rather than applying a material claim to the whole product.
Which of these holds the most filtered water?
Of the separately confirmed figures here, BRITA Glass states 1.5 litres and standard Aarke Purifier states 1.18 litres. PHOX V2’s 2.2-litre advertised size is not used as a confirmed filtered capacity.
Does a glass jug filter better than a plastic jug?
Vessel material alone does not establish treatment performance. Compare the exact filter media, stated purpose and supporting specification.
Do refillable filters need replacement media?
Yes. The shell is retained, but fresh media and any other specified refill parts are still required. Time and volume limits apply to each dose.
Can all glass jugs go in the dishwasher?
No universal rule applies. Follow the instructions for each part, including temperature limits and exclusions for indicators, lids or seals.
