Water filter jug vs tap-mounted filter vs under-sink system
Compare filter jugs, tap attachments and under-sink systems by water use, treatment, installation, space and replacement costs for a UK kitchen.

What changes when you move beyond a jug?
Start with the inconvenience you want to remove. If the jug is always empty, you may need a larger ready-to-pour reservoir or an on-demand supply. If the kettle still scales, the cartridge’s treatment purpose matters more than where the housing sits. Replacing a jug with an unsuitable tap attachment can solve the refill chore while leaving the original scale concern unchanged.
Think about an ordinary busy morning: bottles, kettle, cooking water and washing up. Which uses should pass through the filter? Who will choose the right outlet or switch position? A system that is easy for one person may create confusion in a shared kitchen. Choose a routine everyone can understand and maintain.
| Format | How water is supplied | Main space demand | First compatibility check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jug | Filter, store and pour a batch | Worktop or fridge shelf | Jug and cartridge family |
| Tap-mounted | Select filtered mode at the spout | Room around and below the tap | Outlet shape, adapter and tap exclusions |
| Under-sink | Existing cold tap or separate filtered outlet | Cupboard plus removal and hand access | Plumbing, tap route, pressure and fittings |
These are point-of-use choices. A kitchen filter does not automatically treat bathroom taps, protect every appliance or become a whole-house water softener. Use our filter finder to narrow the format, then check the exact model.
Choose a jug when storage and reversibility matter
A jug is straightforward when you want cold water ready in the fridge, have modest daily use or cannot alter the kitchen. There is no plumbed connection to assess. You still need to measure the shelf and allow room to lift, pour and refill the vessel; advertised total capacity is different from filtered water ready to use.
The Marella 2.4L provides 1.4 litres of filtered storage. That can suit a small household but will not fill several large bottles in one round. Before changing formats, compare a larger jug or dispenser with the capacity and weight guide. A heavier full vessel may be less convenient than a smaller jug refilled more often.

Watch forTwo large bottles can mean another refill.
Choose it for a small household; its 1.4-litre filtered capacity means more refills when several people pour at once.
A jug also lets you choose a compatible scale-focused cartridge where that is the priority. See the hard-water jug shortlist for the distinction between the vessel and its media. Keep the cleaning, stored-water and replacement routine in the decision; a cartridge’s maximum litres do not cancel its calendar limit.
Choose a tap attachment when refilling is the main problem
A tap-mounted filter removes the stored reservoir from the process. You run cold water through filtered mode when needed, then return to unfiltered mode for uses that do not need treatment. This can free fridge space, although the filtered water arrives at the incoming cold-water temperature rather than being chilled.
The practical trade-off moves to the sink. The attachment adds bulk and lowers or shifts the outlet. Check whether a kettle, pan and tall bottle can still sit beneath it and whether the tap swivels without hitting a wall or draining board. A compatible thread is only one part of a successful fit.

For an eligible round tap outlet. Its membrane differs from the standard V refill; neither cartridge reduces hardness.
BRITA ON TAP Pro V-MF combines a digital remaining-capacity display with the V-MF cartridge. It is an option for eligible outlets, not pull-out or spray heads. Its media retain hardness minerals, so it should not be bought to deliver the same scale reduction as a hardness-focused jug refill. Read the tap-fit guide before the tap-mounted shortlist.
Choose under-sink filtration when the cupboard and plumbing suit it
An under-sink system can keep the worktop clear and leave the main tap head unchanged. The water may feed the existing cold tap, a separate small tap or a dedicated passage within a suitable three-way mixer. These arrangements have different installation and cartridge-use consequences; they are not interchangeable ways of connecting any housing.
A separate outlet can reserve filtered water for drinking and cooking. An existing-tap connection may filter most cold water drawn there, including cleaning and rinsing, increasing cartridge throughput. Read direct-connect versus separate-tap filters before estimating service costs.

A dedicated filtered-water branch. Confirm the selected bundle includes all three named filters and the tap; the manufacturer’s configurable base pack differs.
The selected HIP TRIO bundle combines three named filter stages with a pillar tap and installation kit. It is a more involved ownership choice than changing one jug cartridge: the stages can have different replacement schedules and need access for unscrewing the housings. Our under-sink choosing guide explains the checks before committing.
Compare the first year and the routine you will keep
Price the complete path to usable water: vessel or system, any tap and adapters, installation, scheduled cartridges and servicing. Separate first-year cash outlay from the recurring refill budget. A starter cartridge included in a system reduces the next purchase; it does not make that service interval costless in a long-term comparison.
Use the same daily drinking-and-cooking demand when comparing treatment needs, then add extra throughput caused by the chosen water path. A direct-connect filter may process more water than the jug it replaces. For each refill, apply the earlier time or volume limit. Multi-stage systems need a line for each stage rather than one optimistic annual cartridge price.
The running-cost calculator helps compare single refill schedules using your own pack prices and limits. Add installer costs separately. For a three-stage system, calculate each stage and combine the totals; do not enter all stages as interchangeable cartridges in one multipack.
Choose the simplest arrangement that meets your actual aim and fits the kitchen. Keep a jug if chilled storage and low disruption are valuable; choose a compatible tap attachment for on-demand use without cupboard plumbing; consider an under-sink installation when the outlet arrangement and maintenance commitment justify it. If the supplied water changes unexpectedly, contact the water supplier rather than choosing a device to hide the problem.
Common questions
Which format is best for hard water?
Check the exact cartridge’s hardness or scale-reduction purpose. BRITA ON TAP V and V-MF retain calcium and magnesium, whereas some compatible jug media and under-sink stages specifically address scale.
Will an under-sink filter chill water?
An ordinary non-chilling system filters the incoming cold supply. Chilling requires separate equipment or appropriate covered fridge storage.
Can I take a filter with me when moving?
A jug is easiest to move. A tap attachment needs a new tap-fit check, while an under-sink system needs proper removal, restoration and reassessment at the new property.
Does a bigger system always filter more substances?
No. Check the named media, exact configuration and evidence for the substance concerned. Housing size and stage count do not establish treatment performance.
Should I compare all cold tap water with jug usage?
For a direct-connect system, include the cold water that will actually pass through it. That can exceed the drinking-and-cooking volume previously filtered in a jug.
