Will a tap-mounted filter fit your kitchen tap? Threads, adapters and exclusions

Check outlet shape, removable aerators, adapter sizes, pull-out and spray-tap exclusions, plus sink clearance before buying a tap-mounted filter.

First rule out the tap types that the filter excludes

Look at how the tap head works before measuring a thread. A fixed round spout with a removable aerator is a plausible candidate for many tap attachments. A pull-out hose head, a spray head or a sensor-controlled outlet is a different design. Its outer shape does not establish a safe place to clamp the weight of a filter.

BRITA’s current ON TAP manual shows exclusions for pull-out outlets, sensor controls, spray outlets, square and oval outlets, and an outlet length below 15mm. The supported round-outlet illustration has a tick; round outlets as a whole are not excluded. That distinction matters when reading a diagram or an abbreviated compatibility description.

Philips’ AWP3703-family manual has its own exclusions and measurements. Do not extend one brand’s supported range to another. If the tap cannot be identified, send the tap model and clear outlet photographs to the filter manufacturer before ordering. The tap-filter shortlist is useful only after this first compatibility screen.

Identify the actual mating connection

Keep the removed aerator, washer and any tap-specific key together. Remove it only using the tap maker’s procedure; protect the finish and stop if it is seized or the required tool is unknown. Damaging the aerator to prove a filter will fit can turn a reversible change into a tap repair.

Inspect which surface carries the thread. An external or male thread is on the outside of the spout connection; an internal or female thread is inside it. The adapter must mate with that exposed connection, including the specified sealing arrangement. The size written on the old aerator can describe the component you removed rather than the new adapter you need.

M22 and M24 are common aerator descriptions, but their presence in a search result is not a universal fit standard for a particular pack. Measure with a suitable tool and compare the exact adapter drawing, thread form and seal location. A ruler can help describe the outlet to support; it cannot verify thread pitch or create compatibility where the manufacturer excludes the tap.

Do not force parts together, stack improvised adapters or use sealing tape to compensate for a wrong thread. Cross-threading may initially feel tight while leaving an unreliable seal. A sound fit starts with the approved connection and undamaged sealing parts.

BRITA and Philips use different adapter limits

The BRITA ON TAP diagram groups adapters as Type A, B and C. It labels Type A options 22mm, Type B options 23mm and 24mm, and the Type C clamping arrangement 15–25mm. Those numbers belong to the illustrated arrangements; they are not a promise that every outlet within that diameter can accept the filter.

The manual’s outlet-shape and minimum-length exclusions still apply. Check the specific supplied pack contains the adapter and gasket you need. A replacement refill purchase will not normally supply the missing attachment hardware.

Choose it only after checking the outlet and supplied adapters. Pull-out or spray taps need particular attention to the fit chart; the filter is not a limescale solution.

The Philips family manual gives a general eligible diameter range of 15–24mm. Its Type C arrangement is specifically described for 15–21mm outlets other than its Type A or B connections. Applying BRITA’s 25mm upper value to Philips would therefore be a mistake. The AWP3703/10 UK model should be assessed with the Philips adapter instructions.

Ask the manufacturer about a tap that lies at a stated boundary or has unusual trim. A photograph of an adapter set without dimensions is weaker evidence than an explicit model match. Record the confirmed adapter type so it can be sourced later if a gasket or fitting wears.

Measure the space left for bottles, pans and movement

A filter can fit the thread and still make the sink awkward to use. Measure vertically from the existing outlet to the surface supporting your bottle or kettle. Then compare that space with the chosen attachment’s drop and outlet position. Include the height of a bottle held upright, rather than assuming it can always be filled on a steep angle.

Check horizontal space on both sides of the spout. A side-mounted cartridge can approach a window, wall, splashback or another tap. Move the tap through its normal swivel range and consider the selector position. The attachment must not act as a handle for turning a stiff tap or take impacts from large cookware.

Think about the cartridge change as well as daily pouring. Can the cap open without removing the whole assembly? Can a user see the reminder and reach the selector? A filter that forces repeated removal may encourage damaged fittings or skipped maintenance.

If the manufacturer provides dimensions for a different colour, generation or larger pack, verify they apply to the selected housing. Retail pack dimensions can describe a box rather than the installed body. Draw a simple outline from confirmed product dimensions to judge obstruction without treating a generic photograph as a scale drawing.

When an alternative water path makes more sense

If the tap is excluded, choose a suitable jug or consider an under-sink system that leaves the main tap head alone. A direct-connect system has its own plumbing checks; it does not become automatically compatible because the spout attachment was unsuitable. A separate filtered-water outlet may require a new hole or a compatible three-way tap.

For a rented kitchen, agree any tap alteration or plumbing work with the landlord and check the tenancy terms. Keep original parts for restoration, but do not assume reversibility settles permission or installation responsibilities. Our installation checklist helps frame those questions.

Before ordering, your record should identify the tap model or confirmed outlet, the selected filter model, the exact adapter and seal, the usable sink clearance and any manufacturer conditions. If one of those is unresolved, a promising diameter match is still an incomplete fit check.

If a fitted system later develops a problem, use the adapter-leak checks or slow-flow guide. The fit assessment here remains the starting point for an unsupported tap.

Common questions

Will every M22 or M24 tap accept a filter?

No. Match the exposed connection, adapter, sealing arrangement and outlet restrictions for the exact filter. Recessed parts, short outlets and other design features can prevent a fit.

Can I fit an attachment to a pull-out spray head?

BRITA’s current ON TAP manual excludes pull-out and spray outlets. Do not improvise a fitting; seek explicit manufacturer approval or choose another filter format.

Does a 15–25mm range apply to Philips too?

No. Those BRITA diagram values must not be transferred to another brand. Philips’ family manual gives different general and Type C ranges.

What if the aerator will not unscrew?

Stop and check the tap maker’s removal procedure and tool. Do not grip or force a finished spout until the correct method is known.

Can the product box dimensions prove it fits my sink?

No. Use confirmed installed housing dimensions and allow for the outlet drop, selector movement, swivel range and cartridge-cap access.
