Tap-mounted water filter leaking at the adapter: seals, alignment and next steps
Locate a tap-mounted filter leak, check the original adapter and seal, refit without force, and recognise when replacement parts or plumbing support are needed.

Find whether the leak is at the adapter, cap or outlet
Turn the tap off before touching a leaking tap-mounted filter. Dry the outside with a clean cloth and identify where water first appears during a brief, controlled cold-water check. Water around the tap connection, water at the cartridge cap and a few seconds of outlet drips after shutoff describe different situations.
BRITA’s ON TAP manual explains that residual pressure can allow water to leave the filtered outlet for a few seconds after the tap is closed. That observation does not explain water escaping around an adapter joint. A continuing leak or water spreading outside the basin needs attention before normal use resumes.
| Location | First check | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Tap-to-adapter joint | Correct adapter, seal and alignment | A new cartridge will fix it |
| Cartridge cap | Cap position and specified seal | The tap thread is the cause |
| Filtered outlet after shutoff | Brief residual drainage or persistent flow? | Every final drop is a failed adapter |
| Tap body or supply beneath sink | Stop and assess the plumbing fault | The attachment alone is responsible |
This guide addresses a problem after fitting. Use the existing tap-fit guide for thread identification, excluded taps and planning. A pull-out or spray tap does not become suitable merely because an adapter can be made to grip it.
Check the original adapter and its specified seal
With water off and residual pressure released as instructed, remove the attachment carefully and support its weight. Keep the original adapter and sealing parts in order. Compare the arrangement with the diagram for the exact model, not a general-purpose washer kit or another brand’s assembly video.
Inspect for a missing, displaced, split or distorted seal and for debris on the sealing face. Check that a piece of the original aerator gasket has not remained where it should have been removed. Clean accessible surfaces only as the tap and filter manufacturers permit; do not scrape a delicate seat with a metal tool.
If a seal or adapter is damaged, obtain the specified replacement through the manufacturer or an authorised parts route. Adding another washer can change engagement and loading without solving the cause. Thread tape, glue and sealant should not be used to improvise a connection designed to seal in a different way.

For an eligible round tap outlet. Its membrane differs from the standard V refill; neither cartridge reduces hardness.
The selected ON TAP Pro is a complete replacement-system example if the existing body is damaged beyond supported repair. It is not a claim that replacing the whole unit is the first step for a displaced washer. Verify the tap remains suitable before ordering any replacement system.
Align the parts and follow the hand-fitting method
Offer the adapter squarely to the correct tap connection. It should engage in the manner described by the manual without starting at an angle or requiring force. If it binds immediately, stop, remove it and recheck alignment and thread compatibility. Continuing can damage both the inexpensive adapter and the tap itself.
BRITA specifically instructs fitting the system without tools. Do not use pliers or a wrench to obtain more leverage or repeatedly tighten a plastic component until the leak changes. For another brand, use its own method and torque instructions if provided; BRITA’s instruction is not a universal assembly procedure.
Support the filter body during fitting so its weight does not pull the connection sideways. Confirm the correct sealing part is in place and the body is seated as shown. Turn on cold water gradually for the prescribed check, keeping the flow and any drips inside the basin. Stop immediately if the joint moves, sprays or continues leaking.
Keep cartridge-cap and supply faults separate
If the first wet point is the cartridge cap, turn water off and check the cap and its specified seal using the matching manual. A cap that is cross-threaded, damaged or not fully in its intended position needs correction. Do not compensate by tightening the tap adapter harder; that acts on a different joint.

Good forKeeping the tap filter supplied after its initial cartridge.
Watch forNot a jug refill; check your system generation.
BRITA lists cross-compatibility with ON TAP V, Pro V-MF and the earlier HF with digital display. It excludes ON TAP versions from before 2019.
The V-MF refill is relevant when the actual compatible cartridge is due or damaged, but it is not an adapter repair. Its correct fit also depends on the ON TAP generation. Keep the cartridge-generation guide separate from identifying the leaking housing part.
A leak from the tap body, a moving tap mounting or water below the sink may require plumbing attention. Where safe and appropriate, isolate the affected supply and obtain help. Do not leave a leaking fitting running while repeatedly buying different cartridges or adapters to experiment with it.
Replace the part that failed and verify the result
After a supported correction, dry the outside and repeat a brief cold-water check in each permitted mode. Watch the same joint and distinguish water tracking down from above from water originating at the cap. Recheck after normal operation so a slow seep is not missed merely because there was no initial spray.

The Philips system is a separately specified alternative, not a source of interchangeable BRITA adapters. Changing brands still requires an exact tap-fit assessment and the matching supplied parts. A universal-looking connector is not evidence that seals, threads and pressure limits are shared.
If the correct original arrangement still leaks, stop using it and send the manufacturer the model, adapter type, first wet point and a clear description of when it occurs. Repeated leakage, cracked plastic, damaged tap threads or unusual pressure needs proper support. For a separate problem with weak filtered delivery, use the slow-flow guide after the connection is sound.
Common questions
Will a new cartridge fix an adapter leak?
Usually it addresses a different part of the system. An adapter leak needs the correct connection, seal and alignment checked first; an exhausted cartridge is a separate replacement decision.
Can I tighten BRITA ON TAP with pliers?
The cited BRITA instructions say to fit it without tools. If the correct parts do not seal with the specified hand-fitting method, stop and investigate rather than adding force.
Is a few seconds of water from the outlet after shutoff a leak?
BRITA explains that residual pressure can produce a few seconds of outlet flow. Water escaping around the adapter joint is a different symptom.
Should I add another washer or thread tape?
Do not improvise the sealing arrangement. Use the specified seal and adapter, and ask the manufacturer for the correct replacement if a part is damaged or missing.
What if the adapter starts crooked or will not turn freely?
Stop, remove it with the water off and check alignment and thread compatibility. Continuing can damage the tap or adapter. Use the existing tap-fit guide for unsupported connections.
