Choose your next guide
The right filter is the one that addresses a defined concern and fits into the way you use the kitchen. A large reduction claim is not useful if it concerns something you have not established is relevant, and a convenient purchase can become awkward if replacements or cleaning are difficult.
- Unsure whether you need a filter? Start with the UK decision guide and your supplier’s information.
- Choosing a portable container? Use jugs and dispensers for capacity, fridge fit, brand comparisons, gravity systems and powered appliances.
- Tired of refilling? Compare tap-mounted and under-sink options before committing to an installation.
- Replacing something you already own? Go to cartridge compatibility and running costs, rather than shopping for a new system.
- Trying to solve a fault? Use filter help to find the relevant care or troubleshooting guide.
This page gives you the buying sequence. The linked guides supply model tables, compatibility checks and the limitations that can rule a product out.
Define what you want the filter to change
Separate taste, kettle scale and a named water-quality concern. These do not point automatically to the same technology. Our taste versus limescale explainer helps define the task, while carbon versus ion exchange explains why the media matters.
A new or unexpected change in your supply should go to your water supplier before it becomes a shopping decision. The Drinking Water Inspectorate’s domestic treatment guidance gives the context for compliant mains supplies in England and Wales. Elsewhere in the UK, consult the relevant supplier and regulator. Use the supplier-report guide to find local information.
For a specific contaminant-reduction promise, check the exact system, cartridge and certification claim. Broad language about purity and a low TDS reading do not establish every aspect of drinking-water safety.
Match the format to the kitchen
A jug when portability and simple setup matter
Measure the fridge shelf and compare filtered capacity, rather than the larger total-volume number. A jug suits someone happy to refill and wash a separate vessel. Start with the general jug shortlist; if kettle scale is the priority, use the separate hard-water assessment.
The Marella below is one compact MAXTRA PRO option, rather than a universal recommendation. Check the selected bundle and your own fridge dimensions.
BRITA Marella 2.4L
A sensible starting point when a fridge-door jug and a widely stocked cartridge family matter more than a large reservoir.
- Filtered / total
- 1.4 / 2.4L
- Depth
- 10.5cm
- Cartridge
- MAXTRA PRO
Good forFridge-door storage and everyday pours.
Watch forTwo large bottles can mean another refill.
Choose it for a small household; its 1.4-litre filtered capacity means more refills when several people pour at once.
A tap-mounted unit when the outlet is compatible
Check the tap thread, adapters and exclusions before comparing the tap-mounted shortlist. A pull-out or spray tap may rule this route out. The ON TAP V below is a different treatment and fitting decision from a jug; it should not be chosen as a hardness-reduction substitute.
BRITA ON TAP V
A tap-mounted option for filtered drinking water without keeping a jug topped up. Its manual change reminder suits someone happy to track cartridge use.

- ON TAP V / V-MF
Good forAvoiding a separate jug on a compatible tap.
Watch forAdded bulk at the outlet and no hardness reduction.
Choose it only after checking the outlet and supplied adapters. Pull-out or spray taps need particular attention to the fit chart; the filter is not a limescale solution.
An under-sink system when installation is practical
Plan the drinking-water outlet, pressure, connections and space to change every stage. The under-sink buying guide and installation checklist are the next steps. A rental or crowded cupboard can change the decision before product price matters.
The HIP TRIO is a multi-stage example: read its configuration and ownership guide and confirm every component in the selected bundle. The system, installation and several replacement stages belong in the budget.
Doulton HIP TRIO · tap & installation bundle
The selected Amazon bundle names HIP TRIO, limescale and fluoride prefilters, a Biotect Ultra ceramic stage, pillar tap and installation kit.

- Separate pillar tap

- 3 filter positions
Good forKeeping filtration hardware off the worktop.
Watch forPlumbing work, tap placement and several consumables.
A dedicated filtered-water branch. Confirm the selected bundle includes all three named filters and the tap; the manufacturer’s configurable base pack differs.
A gravity or powered countertop system for a different routine
Use the gravity shortlist for candle-based systems and the countertop RO shortlist for membrane appliances. They introduce different cleaning, filling and consumable commitments. If heating or cooling is the aim, compare hot dispensers with kettles or chillers with fridge jugs.
Compare the first year and the years after
Price the exact refill before buying the container. Record the cartridge family, pack quantity and its time or volume limit. The running-cost calculator can compare annual cartridge spending from your own current prices and consumption. It does not automatically include installation, electricity, water discharge or every stage of a multi-filter system.
Compare the initial bundle separately: one listing may include several filters while another supplies a single cartridge. Add delivery and any subscription terms, then consider whether you can store and use a multipack sensibly. Four-week changes are not the same as calendar-month changes.
For a powered appliance, check electricity, cleaning and replacement needs in its exact manual. For an installed system, ask what the installer will supply and what future service costs cover. A cheap first box is only one part of ownership.
Check the selected model before paying
Keep the full model code, cartridge code and matching manual together. Confirm the selected Amazon variant, pack contents, UK connections where relevant and available replacement supply. Photographs or a familiar brand name cannot resolve a generation mismatch.
Use the manufacturer manual for the exact appliance where the range has several label-code versions. For claimed independent certification, consult the certifier’s current drinking-water treatment listing and verify the named reduction, rather than relying on a logo alone.
Our editorial standards and source policy explain how documented specifications, purchase options and recommendations are treated. Product listings can change; confirm the selected item before ordering.
Questions before buying
Which type of water filter should I buy first?
Define the concern, then compare the formats that can address it within your space and upkeep limits. If you are unsure that filtration is needed, start with your supplier’s information and the UK decision guide.
Is a more expensive system always better?
No. Compare the exact treatment purpose, fit and ongoing costs. Additional stages or temperature controls can add maintenance without addressing the concern that matters to you.
Can I compare annual costs from the cartridge pack price?
Use price per cartridge and the applicable time or volume limit. Add other stages, installation and appliance costs separately. The calculator makes the cartridge assumptions visible.
Should I replace a slow filter with a different system?
Check the model’s preparation, fitting and troubleshooting guidance first. Trapped air, an overdue refill or a fitting problem can need a different response from buying a whole system.
Do all filters from the same brand use the same replacement?
No. Match the complete system and cartridge code, including generation and connection. Use the compatibility directory before selecting a refill pack.
