Large water filter jug vs dispenser: capacity, weight and refilling
Compare a large portable jug with a tap dispenser using Marella XL and BRITA Flow: filtered capacity, water weight, shelf space and refill workload.

Large jug vs dispenser: what changes?
The practical difference is movement. A jug comes out of its resting place so you can pour at the table, fill a bottle or take it to another room. A dispenser normally stays in one serving position while people bring glasses or bottles to its tap. Either can be inconvenient if its storage location works against the way your household drinks water.
We use Marella XL and BRITA Flow as concrete examples because their published capacities are clear and both use MAXTRA PRO cartridges. This isolates the container decision. It does not show that every dispenser filters better than every jug, or that the larger vessel needs fewer cartridge changes.
| Check | Marella XL | Flow |
|---|---|---|
| Filtered / total | 2.0 / 3.5L | 5.2 / 8.2L |
| Dimensions | 25.8W × 25.8H × 14.8D cm | 30.4W × 22H × 21.4D cm |
| Serving | Lift and pour | Tap dispensing |
| Filter family | MAXTRA PRO | MAXTRA PRO |
| Water in filtered reservoir only | About 2kg | About 5.2kg |
The weight row is a calculation using approximately one kilogram per litre of water. It excludes the empty vessel, cartridge and any water still in the upper reservoir. Total capacity also cannot be substituted for filtered capacity when planning the water immediately ready to serve.
When a large jug is the more useful choice
Marella XL can suit someone who wants more water per fill without committing a whole shelf to a dispenser. Its two-litre filtered reservoir can cover two 750ml bottles with nominal capacity left over. A handle and pouring spout let you move the water to where it is needed, although a filled jug still requires a comfortable grip and controlled lifting.
Think about the route from the sink to storage. A high shelf, low fridge door or crowded table can make a full jug awkward even if the empty one feels light. Use the actual dimensions and allow room to get your hand around the handle. A larger capacity alone cannot establish a comfortable grip, easy pouring or suitability for a particular user.
BRITA Marella XL 3.5L
The larger Marella gives you two litres of filtered water per fill without changing cartridge family.

- 2 / 3.5L
- Depth
- 14.8cm

- MAXTRA PRO
Good forMore water ready to pour between refills.
Watch forA wider, heavier jug; measure the shelf first.
Choose it when refilling is the main irritation, provided the wider body fits your shelf and feels manageable when full.
A large jug also suits homes that use filtered water in several places: a bottle at the sink, a glass at the table and water for the kettle. It becomes less convenient when several people empty it in quick succession. For a smaller version, read Marella Cool vs XL; the change in depth may matter more than the total litres.
When a fixed tap dispenser earns its space
Flow provides 5.2 litres filtered, which can reduce the number of reservoir refills during a busy period. It is useful when there is one shared serving point and people are happy to bring their drinking vessels to it. A tap avoids lifting the whole container for each glass, but the tank still has to be filled, moved when necessary and cleaned.
BRITA Flow 8.2L dispenser
A dispensing tank to consider when several people pour from the same place. Its larger reservoir offers more filtered water between refills than the jugs in our shortlist.

- MAXTRA PRO
Good forServing several glasses without lifting a full jug.
Watch forShelf space, full weight and access for cleaning.
Check a stable shelf, room above the sliding lid and space below the dispensing tap. A larger tank still uses a MAXTRA PRO cartridge with its own replacement limit.
Its published footprint is 30.4 × 21.4cm, with a height of 22cm. That describes the body dimensions, not the complete working space. You also need access to the sliding fill opening and room in front of and below the tap for a glass or bottle. A container can fit on a fridge shelf while being impossible to use there comfortably.
Use a stable surface suitable for the filled load and follow the fridge or furniture maker’s guidance. Do not solve a clearance problem by leaving a heavy vessel perched beyond its support. The dedicated Flow guide takes you through the serving and filling checks.
Compare a busy morning, not just daily litres
Suppose the household wants three litres in a short period. A nominally full two-litre XL reservoir cannot provide that without more filtering; Flow’s stated 5.2-litre reservoir can. That does not mean Flow filters each litre faster. A large unfiltered upper reservoir still needs to pass water through the cartridge before it is ready to pour.
The pattern matters as much as the total. Three litres spread over a day can be easy to manage with a jug. Three litres requested at once, just before school or work, creates a different bottleneck. Write down the largest realistic demand in one sitting and choose a filtered reservoir around that need.
Avoid oversizing just to reduce the number of trips to the sink. A household that drinks little filtered water may gain less from a large stationary tank than it loses in cleaning access and occupied shelf space. Neither format removes the need to wash the vessel and follow the storage instructions.
A bigger tank does not buy a longer-lasting filter
Both examples use the MAXTRA PRO family. The cartridge keeps its own maximum time and volume limits regardless of whether it sits in a compact jug or Flow. With the 150-litre, four-week instruction, a household filtering eight litres a day reaches the volume limit in 18.75 days, before four weeks. That is a budgeting calculation, not a promise of performance for that exact period.

Watch forFour weeks can arrive long before 150 litres.
Check the MAXTRA PRO family against your jug instructions. It is not a replacement for BRITA Classic, MicroDisc or ON TAP cartridges.
Compare the included cartridges as well as the container price. A cheap tank with one filter and a costlier jug with several filters are different bundles. Use current delivered prices in the running-cost calculator, and keep the initial vessel cost separate from recurring refills. For a scale priority, choose the appropriate cartridge purpose rather than assuming a larger tank improves hardness reduction.
If constant filling remains a problem after allowing for a dispenser, consider whether a tap or under-sink system better matches your demand. That brings different compatibility and installation requirements, so it should be a separate decision rather than an automatic upgrade.
The ZeroWater size guide separates generations and vessel formats. The Aqua Optima Perfect Pour guide explains its two-cartridge arrangement and replacement-pair costs.
For ceramic gravity systems, compare gravity filter vs jug and the British Berkefeld sizes. Their stored capacity and treatment speed are separate considerations.
Questions before you buy
Does a dispenser filter water better than a jug?
The vessel format does not establish filtration performance. Marella XL and Flow use the same MAXTRA PRO family; choose the appropriate cartridge and compare its stated purpose.
Is the Flow’s 8.2 litres all ready to drink?
No. BRITA states 5.2 litres filtered within 8.2 litres total. Water in the upper reservoir still needs to pass through the cartridge.
Is a dispenser easier for someone who struggles to lift?
A tap avoids lifting the full vessel for each glass, but filling, positioning and washing still need consideration. Allow for the route from the sink and the weight of water as well as the vessel.
Does the larger reservoir reduce cartridge spending?
Not at the same filtered-water consumption and cartridge limits. It changes storage and refill trips; high consumption can still require frequent cartridge changes.
Can I keep Flow on any fridge shelf?
No universal fit or load claim is possible. Check the body dimensions, filled load, shelf instructions, filling access and usable space around the tap.
