Doulton replacement filter identification guide

Match a Doulton replacement by housing, cartridge name, code and fitting. Understand Biotect Ultra 2501, M12 connections and separate pre-filters.

Read the element name and code

For a Doulton replacement, begin with a record of the system installed in your home. Find the housing model in the original instructions or installation paperwork. Record the element name and any four-character identification code from the existing cartridge, plus the connection specified by the housing. Photograph the markings so similar names do not become a guessing exercise later.

Doulton’s identification guide uses names and codes to distinguish its replacement elements. Biotect Ultra 2501, Biotect Ultra SI 2505 and British Berkefeld elements are not names to shorten to “Doulton candle”. The suffix and code are useful purchasing information.

Do not open a pressurised housing simply to inspect the cartridge. Use the system’s own isolation and pressure-release procedure, or ask the installer to help identify it. If the label is hidden or unreadable, installation records and photographs of the exterior can be a safer first step than dismantling unfamiliar plumbing.

Biotect Ultra 2501 and the M12 fitting

The Biotect Ultra specification names its M12 compatibility requirement. The refill below is relevant when your exact system and existing element confirm that match. It is a ceramic-element purchase, rather than a new installation or a complete set of consumables for every Doulton housing.

Doulton ceramic replacement

The ceramic replacement for compatible Doulton M12 systems, including the HIP TRIO. Buy the exact 2501 type rather than judging by cartridge length alone.

Watch forNot a British Berkefeld gravity cartridge or an M15 refill.

This replaces the ceramic element; it does not renew the HIP TRIO’s two separate pre-filters. Follow their own replacement instructions as well.

Check that the selected listing names Biotect Ultra and the correct type. If the title only says a length, compare the full details and ask the seller to clarify the fitting. An M12 element is not a substitute for an M15 connection, an open-both-ends cartridge or a gravity-system stem. Do not try to make a thread fit by forcing it.

Keep British Berkefeld gravity elements separate

Doulton’s replacement guide distinguishes British Berkefeld gravity elements, including Ultra Sterasyl and Ultra Fluoride, from its pressurised-system refills. These are different system arrangements. The material being ceramic does not establish interchangeability, and a familiar shared manufacturer does not remove the need for the exact fit check.

If you own a stainless gravity vessel, identify that vessel and the installed element before following an under-sink recommendation. Conversely, a cartridge recommended for a gravity vessel is not automatically appropriate inside a pressurised Doulton housing. The cartridge family directory provides the broader distinction.

A HIP TRIO has more than one replacement task

The HIP TRIO compatibility information identifies its ceramic stage and two pre-filter positions. Record the exact pre-filter type in each position. Two installations can have different pre-filter choices, so a generic three-filter shopping list may be wrong even when the housing name is identical.

Buying one Biotect Ultra does not renew both pre-filters. Equally, replacing a pre-filter does not reset the age of the ceramic element. Keep a separate entry for each stage, including its fitted date and the instructions that apply to it. This is especially useful when different cartridges are changed at different visits.

Plan maintenance without guessing the lifetime

Doulton recommends changing its ceramic element around six months in the guidance reviewed here. Its identification page also notes that pre-filter changes can vary by type, with different intervals. Read the exact element and housing instructions rather than applying one schedule to the entire cupboard.

A reduced flow can prompt a cleaning check where the manufacturer permits cleaning the ceramic surface. Cleaning is not the same as regenerating every material inside the element, and it does not create a new replacement date. Keep the original fitting date in the maintenance record even if the surface is cleaned between changes.

Build a useful replacement record

For each housing position, keep the system model, element name, code, fitting, fitted date, replacement limit and a photograph. Add the exact pack used, so another household member or an installer can repeat the purchase without starting again from a vague receipt description.

If an element code cannot be read, contact Doulton with the housing model and photographs. Avoid treating a marketplace recommendation engine as a compatibility authority. A similar-looking cartridge can be wrong at the connection or designed around a different operating system.

For costs, add the separate consumable schedules rather than multiplying one ceramic refill price by the number of housings. The running-cost guide explains what a single-cartridge estimate includes and why installation, pre-filters and other ownership costs must be budgeted separately.

For a new three-stage installation, the HIP TRIO buying guide explains the selected bundle, stage order and commissioning. Check cupboard and removal space before ordering the housing.

For identified British Berkefeld gravity equipment, compare Ultra Sterasyl vs Ultra Fluoride. Use the candle care guide for permitted cleaning and replacement limits, or the system size comparison when choosing a vessel. This page remains the starting directory for housing and element identification.

Questions before you buy

Is every 10-inch Doulton candle compatible?

No. Length is only one dimension. The end connection, housing, element code and intended system must match. A description that only says 10-inch ceramic filter leaves essential fit information unresolved.

What does 2501 identify?

Doulton uses 2501 to identify Biotect Ultra. Match that name and code with the housing’s compatibility information and the M12 fitting requirement. Do not substitute a similar name with another code without explicit guidance.

Can Biotect Ultra fit a British Berkefeld gravity system?

Doulton’s identification guidance separates its mains-pressure elements from British Berkefeld gravity elements. Do not buy a Biotect Ultra M12 refill for a gravity system simply because both elements are ceramic.

Does replacing Biotect Ultra renew all three HIP TRIO stages?

No. HIP TRIO has a ceramic stage and two pre-filter positions. Record each pre-filter’s own type and schedule. A ceramic refill pack is not a complete three-stage replacement kit.

Can cleaning replace a scheduled cartridge change?

Cleaning may restore flow where the manufacturer permits it, but it does not reset the age of the filter media. Follow the exact element’s cleaning and replacement guidance, including the separate limits for any pre-filters.
