British Berkefeld 6L vs 8.5L vs 12L: choosing a practical size

Compare British Berkefeld body dimensions, actual filtered storage, stand clearance, filled weight and practical household serving calculations.

British Berkefeld sizes: compare the actual filtered capacities

British Berkefeld uses 6L, 8.5L and 12L as nominal model labels. Doulton’s descriptions give slightly smaller filtered-storage figures: 5.6L, 7.8L and 11.5L. Keep those two sets of numbers separate when planning how much water can be ready at the dispensing tap.

Nominal modelFiltered storageHeightBody diameter
6L5.6L473mm194mm
8.5L7.8L500mm224mm
12L11.5L603mm246mm

These are manufacturer body measurements before adding a stand or serving clearance. A round vessel’s diameter is not the complete working footprint: the projecting tap, access for your hand and the receiving glass need space too. Confirm the selected model and bundle before buying accessories.

The 8.5L body adds only 27mm in height over the 6L, while its diameter increases by 30mm. Moving from 8.5L to 12L adds 103mm in height and 22mm in diameter. Those differences can matter more beneath a wall cupboard than the product label’s implied household size.

Turn your serving routine into a storage requirement

Count what you need together, not just daily glasses. Four 750ml bottles require three litres. Add 1.5 litres for a kettle and the combined serving demand is 4.5 litres, within the nominal filtered storage of all three named bodies once that water has been prepared.

Eight 750ml bottles require six litres, beyond the 6L model’s 5.6-litre filtered reservoir. That does not make the smaller model unusable; it means another filtering cycle or a changed serving routine. Decide whether that interruption matters enough to justify a larger vessel.

Smaller countertop footprint

British Berkefeld 6L with two Ultra Sterasyl candles

A compact British Berkefeld gravity system with two Ultra Sterasyl candles; the manufacturer specifies 5.6 litres of filtered storage.

Watch forMeasure refill headroom and tap clearance.

Choose for smaller serving demand when the 473mm body height and 194mm diameter fit your space and you can maintain its candles.

A large lower tank is storage, not a promise that the same amount will filter in one hour. The linked 6L and 8.5L systems and the selected 12L bundle each include two Ultra Sterasyl candles. Compare the actual installed configuration and its operating instructions, rather than assuming a larger tank automatically has more candles.

Doulton’s household labels can be useful starting points, but serving habits differ. One person filling several large bottles may need more prepared water than three people making occasional glasses. Avoid paying for stored water you rarely use and still have to manage hygienically.

Measure the complete serving position

Mark the proposed base circle on the worktop and check that it is fully supported. Measure overhead clearance with the lid removed and with the container you will use for refilling. A tank that fits under a cupboard while closed may be awkward to replenish safely.

Shared countertop serving

British Berkefeld 8.5L with two Ultra Sterasyl candles

A mid-sized British Berkefeld system with two Ultra Sterasyl candles and 7.8 litres of manufacturer-specified filtered storage.

Watch forA larger reservoir does not make water filter instantly.

Choose after checking its 500mm body height, 224mm diameter, refill access and the replacement cost of the fitted candle pair.

Then consider glass clearance below the tap. A correctly matched stand raises the vessel, but increases the overall height and can occupy more counter space. Do not improvise by placing the system on a narrow box or leaving part of the base unsupported over the counter edge.

Serving space beneath an 8.5L tap

British Berkefeld 8.5L stainless-steel stand

A size-specific British Berkefeld stand for the 8.5L vessel, raising it to improve serving clearance beneath the tap.

Choose only after measuring the complete supported arrangement and overhead clearance; this selected stand is not the 6L or 12L version.

View on Amazon ↗Stand only; vessel, tap and candles are separate unless bundled.

The linked stand is specifically the 8.5L version. Check the correct version for a 6L or 12L tank; a shared brand name does not prove a supporting fit. Use its actual supplied dimensions and arrangement rather than adding a generic stand-height figure to every model.

Keep the tap away from locations where a bag, sleeve or child can knock it open. Think about bringing water to the tank, filling a glass and wiping the surrounding counter. A serving position is successful when all three tasks are comfortable, not simply when the empty cylinder fits.

Allow for water weight and washing access

At approximately one kilogram per litre, 5.6L, 7.8L and 11.5L of stored water alone represent roughly 5.6kg, 7.8kg and 11.5kg. These figures exclude the vessel, fittings and any water still in the upper chamber; they are not full assembled weights or recommendations to lift a filled system.

Choose a surface and stand appropriate for the complete load. Empty the chambers before moving the unit for cleaning. Carrying a tall, full tank with a projecting tap is a different task from moving an empty saucepan, and a bigger model increases the handling commitment.

Larger batches in one location

British Berkefeld 12L Ultra Sterasyl and steel-tap bundle

A larger British Berkefeld 12L bundle with two Ultra Sterasyl candles and a stainless-steel tap; filtered storage is specified at 11.5 litres.

Good forLarger batches in one location.

Watch forFull weight and overhead access need planning.

Choose only with space for the 603mm-high, 246mm-diameter body and a safe cleaning and refilling routine for the larger tank.

View on Amazon ↗Selected bundle includes two Ultra Sterasyl candles and a steel tap, not a stand.

The selected 12L listing is a two-candle Ultra Sterasyl bundle with a steel tap, not a stand-inclusive or four-candle pack. Check those contents independently of the vessel’s storage size. A bundle can simplify shopping, but only when its accessories match the arrangement you intend to use.

Measure your sink and draining area as well. Chambers and tap parts need regular cleaning, with candles removed and protected from contamination. If the 12L body is awkward to wash, a smaller tank may be the more practical long-term choice even when the worktop can hold it.

Choose the smallest size that comfortably serves your pattern

The 6L is the compact starting point when its filtered reservoir covers your main serving period. The 8.5L offers more prepared storage with a moderate increase in body size. The 12L is useful when larger batches justify its height, weight and cleaning requirements.

A bigger lower tank does not remove overfill risk. Before adding to the upper chamber, allow enough free space below for the water that will arrive. Follow the leak and overflow guide if water appears at the nesting joint.

Keep candle purpose as a separate decision. Read Ultra Sterasyl vs Ultra Fluoride for media choices, and the gravity shortlist for the complete purchase checks. Body size should solve a serving problem, not stand in for a performance claim.

Common questions

Is the 6L system six litres of filtered storage?

The manufacturer lists 5.6L filtered capacity for the nominal 6L vessel. Its 8.5L and 12L models are listed at 7.8L and 11.5L filtered respectively.

Does the 12L filter water faster than the 6L?

Body size alone does not establish treatment speed. Candle number and grade, conditioning, water level and condition affect flow. The linked 12L bundle contains two candles.

Can one stand fit all three sizes?

Do not assume that. British Berkefeld offers size-specific stands. The selected 8.5L Amazon stand is not the 6L or 12L version.

Does the listed height include a stand?

The 473mm, 500mm and 603mm figures here are body heights. Add the actual stand and allow lid and refill clearance for the complete arrangement.

Should I fill the top every time it empties?

Check the lower reservoir first. Water still arriving from above can overflow a nearly full lower chamber; the system is not described as having automatic refill shutoff.
