Why is my water filter jug filtering slowly? Air locks and other causes

Work through slow jug filtering by cartridge family: preparation, trapped air, seating, Evolve+ media settling and when replacement or support is appropriate.

An unbranded filter jug with water in its upper and lower reservoirs

First, identify when the slow flow began

A new cartridge that barely drains points to a different check from one that has worked normally for weeks. Before changing anything, identify the jug model, the cartridge family, when it was fitted and whether the problem started immediately, after a move or near a replacement deadline. This short record is also useful if you need manufacturer support.

There is no single filtering time that applies to every jug and cartridge. Water volume, the exact design and its condition affect the comparison. Do not diagnose a fault merely because a different model in a video appears faster; compare the same device and its usual behaviour.

If the water itself has a new smell, colour or unexplained particles, follow the water concern guidance before treating the issue as just slow flow. A faster cartridge is not a way to investigate a supply problem. The checks below concern an otherwise normal cold drinking-water supply and an intact supported jug system.

MAXTRA PRO: release air and check the seat

Start with BRITA’s preparation procedure. Immerse the cartridge in cold water and move it gently to release trapped air, then seat it firmly in the funnel. The current jug manual tells you to press it further down if water is not flowing through. Use hand pressure only as intended; a cartridge that will not seat should be checked for the correct family and model.

BRITA’s PerfectFit mechanism is designed to let water through with the supported cartridge properly fitted. Do not pry out, cut or defeat that mechanism. Flow is a different vessel without that PerfectFit system, so a diagnosis based on the small-jug valve should not be applied to Flow automatically.

If you skipped the first-use sequence, follow the complete MAXTRA PRO preparation guide, including the initial discarded fills. Do not treat a quick rinse under the tap as necessarily completing every required step. A new cartridge can also be slightly damp inside its sealed packaging because of manufacturing preparation; dampness alone is not evidence of a used or faulty product.

Check that the funnel and other removable parts are seated correctly and the lid closes as designed. If an incompatible cartridge was bought, use the compatibility directory to find the supported family rather than forcing the jug together.

Evolve+: use Aqua Optima’s own troubleshooting sequence

Aqua Optima describes trapped air and compacted media as possible causes of slow or blocked flow. Its FAQ gives a specific sequence: remove the filter from the inner vessel, shake it vigorously to redistribute the media, rinse briefly under cold running water and refit it. That advice is for its cartridge system; it is not the same as BRITA’s gentle first-use movement.

For a newly installed Evolve+, also confirm that you completed the normal 5–10-minute soak, one-minute rinse and required initial fills. Our Evolve+ preparation page separates that full first-use procedure from the brief troubleshooting rinse. A short cold rinse during troubleshooting does not replace the initial soak when fitting a fresh filter.

Fit also depends on the vessel. Some Aqua Optima jugs use the underside twist-lock arrangement in the leaflet; supported BRITA jugs use a different seating approach. Where PerfectFit compatibility requires Aqua Optima’s key, follow that specific guidance and confirm the key is present. An oval outline is not enough to establish a correct water path.

After the permitted procedure, observe the flow with the jug assembled normally. If it remains blocked or repeatedly slows, contact Aqua Optima with the cartridge and jug details. Repeated shaking is not a way to extend a cartridge beyond its stated life.

Check the vessel and the original replacement record

A dirty vessel, incorrectly reassembled funnel or an overdue filter needs attention on its own terms. Clean the removable vessel parts according to the model’s instructions, keeping detergent out of sealed cartridge media. Read the component cleaning guide before putting an indicator lid or a Flow tank in the dishwasher.

Review the original fitting age and your daily filtered-water use. MAXTRA PRO’s maximum is 150 litres or four weeks; Evolve+ is 100 litres or 30 days. Earlier replacement can be required by the water conditions or current pack instructions. A flow improvement after a permitted preparation check does not give an overdue filter a fresh allowance.

Avoid boiling, freezing, squeezing, drilling or opening a sealed cartridge to change its flow. Those are not the cited manufacturer procedures. If the casing is cracked, parts are loose or water escapes by an unintended route, stop using the affected assembly and ask the maker about the fault.

Replace the right part when the checks point to it

A cartridge that is due, damaged or confirmed faulty is a sensible replacement purchase. A new jug is usually a separate decision. If the existing body and funnel remain serviceable, start with the correct refill rather than changing the whole system because a single cartridge has slowed.

Choose the pack for the cartridge family actually supported by your jug. If a fresh, properly prepared supported cartridge still fails to flow, give the manufacturer the model, pack identity, fitting age and the steps already tried. Keep the packaging and order details available for a faulty-product enquiry.

For recurring high demand, distinguish slow filtering from an undersized reservoir. A compact jug can work correctly yet still require another fill for several large bottles. That is the capacity question covered by large jugs vs dispensers, rather than proof that its cartridge is defective.

Common questions

Can trapped air make a new filter drain slowly?

It is one cause covered by manufacturer preparation and troubleshooting guidance. Use the exact filter’s procedure rather than assuming all slow flow is an air lock.

Should I shake every cartridge vigorously?

No. Aqua Optima’s slow-flow FAQ gives vigorous shaking for its filter. BRITA’s MAXTRA PRO preparation uses gentle movement in cold water. Keep the brand-specific procedures separate.

Can I remove PerfectFit to improve flow?

Do not disable the mechanism. Check the supported cartridge, preparation and correct seating, then seek manufacturer help if it still does not flow normally.

Does faster flow prove the filter is working better?

No. Flow speed alone does not establish treatment performance or confirm the correct water path. Fit and cartridge condition still matter.

Should I replace the entire jug?

A due or faulty cartridge may be the only replacement needed. Consider the body, funnel and indicator separately, and contact the maker if a new correctly prepared refill still fails.
