British Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl vs Ultra Fluoride: differences and compatibility

Compare British Berkefeld 8674 Ultra Sterasyl and 8B76 Ultra Fluoride candles: purpose, compatible gravity housings, mixed-grade exclusions and replacement limits.

Identify 8674 Ultra Sterasyl and 8B76 Ultra Fluoride

Read the complete candle name and code before comparing replacement packs. British Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl is the 8674 gravity element, with part W9121226. Ultra Fluoride is 8B76, part W9120133. These identities matter more than the shared white ceramic appearance or the word “Ultra”.

Keep the exact housing and fitted number in your record. The Doulton identification directory remains the main reference for distinguishing gravity stems from pressurised-system elements. A seven-inch description alone does not settle connection, grade or suitability.

Choose the treatment objective, not the most elaborate name

Ultra Sterasyl combines a ceramic outer, activated carbon and other internal treatment media. Doulton positions it for a range of reductions and taste-related purposes. Use the relevant performance document for the specific reduction that matters to you; a long retail title should not become a guarantee that every unwanted substance is covered.

Ultra Fluoride adds a fluoride-reduction purpose. Before paying for that media, confirm your supplier information and what you actually want to change. A personal filtration preference does not establish that your incoming tap water is unsafe or that all households require fluoride reduction.

Match the 8B76 identity and maintain a same-grade configuration. Follow the exact capacity, time and preparation instructions.

Neither candle should automatically be treated as a water softener. A retained-mineral ceramic approach differs from a cartridge explicitly intended to reduce scale-forming hardness. For that distinction, see taste filtration vs limescale reduction rather than choosing by a TDS meter display.

The media does not remove the need for a suitable source. These ownership guides concern cold potable tap water. The system instructions restrict untreated raw or unsafe/unknown sources; portability and outdoor marketing do not turn the product into an all-purpose emergency disinfection method.

Compatibility includes the whole fitted configuration

Doulton expressly advises against combining Ultra Sterasyl and Ultra Fluoride in one gravity system. Water can take parallel routes through the installed candles. A mixed tank is therefore not a sensible way to obtain the best claims of two separate grades in every serving.

If changing grade, confirm that the housing supports the intended complete configuration and replace the installed set as directed. Do not simply add one Ultra Fluoride beside an existing Ultra Sterasyl. Match the supplied washers, stems and blanking arrangements, and use the correct conditioning procedure.

The manufacturer describes compatibility with several other gravity brands, but a broad cross-brand statement still needs a physical and documentary match for the exact vessel. Hole size, stem reach, seal seating and the maker’s supported arrangement matter. Do not assume an identical-looking candle transfers the original system’s certification.

These gravity candles are not substitutes for a Doulton Biotect Ultra 2501 M12 element in an under-sink housing. Nor does a mains-pressure priming instruction belong to a free-standing tank. Keep gravity and pressurised-system instructions separate throughout identification, installation and cleaning.

Read percentages, capacities and certification with their conditions

The Ultra Fluoride product page describes an up-to-98.9% result from in-house testing at a nominal incoming concentration of 1ppm. Keep the test type and concentration attached to that percentage. It does not promise identical reduction at every concentration, flow rate, age or household installation.

Do not turn a marketing capacity example into permission to exceed the supplied instructions. The linked candle leaflets give grade-specific capacities, including 1500 litres for these grades, while the product guidance recommends six-month replacement. Earlier capacity, water-condition or damage limits still matter. Ask Doulton when documents for your exact version differ rather than choosing the longest number.

The cited 8.5L SS2 Ultra Sterasyl document has a defined two-candle configuration and named claims. That is distinct from a generic material mark, a fluoride test or another body fitted with four candles. Our certification checklist explains how to match model, standard and claim without transferring evidence.

A clean-looking ceramic surface cannot verify the internal media’s remaining capacity. Likewise, a low TDS reading cannot independently confirm fluoride, lead or microbiological reduction. Use the product limits and appropriate evidence, not appearance or taste alone, to decide continued use.

Buy the complete set you actually need

For two installed candles, a two-pack is one complete replacement event. At a normal six-month schedule, annual demand is two such pairs before any earlier condition. Four installed candles need four replacements at a complete change; a four-pack is not several years of supply for that arrangement.

Compare delivered cost per complete change, then account for the actual interval. Keep the starter system’s included candles separate from ongoing purchases. A low unit price does not help if the selected pack has the wrong grade or cannot be used alongside the existing installation.

Common questions

Can Ultra Sterasyl and Ultra Fluoride be used together?

Doulton advises against mixing these grades in the same system because it affects performance. Choose the documented same-grade configuration for the housing.

Which code identifies Ultra Sterasyl?

The gravity candle is identified as 8674, with part number W9121226. It is distinct from Biotect Ultra 2501 for compatible mains-pressure systems.

Does Ultra Sterasyl remove fluoride?

Do not assume the Ultra Fluoride claim applies to Ultra Sterasyl. If fluoride reduction is the defined objective, check the exact 8B76 product evidence and installation requirements.

Is the advertised fluoride percentage an independent certification?

The Ultra Fluoride product page describes up to 98.9% in-house testing at a nominal 1ppm influent concentration. That conditional test statement is not, by itself, a claim of independent certification for every installation.

Does cleaning renew the media inside either candle?

No. Surface cleaning may recover flow but does not regenerate internal media or reset the applicable six-month recommendation and capacity conditions.
