How to store filtered water in the fridge

Store jug-filtered water in a clean covered vessel, follow BRITA’s 24-hour guidance and choose a fridge location with enough space and easy handling.

How long can filtered jug water stay in the fridge?

For the BRITA MAXTRA PRO jug system, the cited manual gives 24 hours and the current FAQ describes use within one day, with a cool place such as the fridge. That is the relevant manufacturer guidance here. Do not replace it with a blanket claim that all filtered water keeps for several days because it looks clear or is refrigerated.

Other cartridge and vessel systems have their own instructions. Check those instructions rather than borrowing a different brand’s longest advertised storage period. The useful household habit is to prepare what you expect to use promptly, keep it covered and maintain the vessel, not to test the maximum possible standing time.

The time since filtering and the time since fitting the cartridge are separate records. A new filter does not make yesterday’s stored water fresh. Fresh water does not renew an old cartridge. See how often to change a jug cartridge for that second schedule.

If the water has been left for an uncertain time or its storage conditions are unknown, discard it and start with fresh water in a clean vessel. If an unusual smell, deposit or supply change is involved, investigate that issue as well. Replacing the water alone does not establish the cause of a persistent problem.

Choose a cool, usable place in the fridge

The Food Standards Agency’s general household chilling guidance recommends a fridge temperature between 0 and 5°C, checked with a fridge thermometer. That is general refrigerator guidance, not evidence that a particular filter’s water-use period can be extended. Follow the fridge manufacturer’s instructions and the filter maker’s storage guidance together.

Choose a stable position where the lid remains closed and the jug can be removed without knocking into a rail or other food. Keep the pouring area clear of spills and avoid a place where exposed food or dirty packaging can contact the spout. Leave the fridge arranged so normal cold-air circulation and door closure are not obstructed.

A door shelf is convenient only if the jug fits with a workable lifting path. A main shelf may be easier when the body is too deep or tall. Use our fridge-door measuring guide to check width, height, depth and the room needed to lift over the retaining rail.

Do not freeze the cartridge or assume a colder setting always means better storage. Avoid a position where the vessel or filter freezes, and follow the model instructions if accidental freezing occurs. Direct sunlight and heat from a worktop appliance are also poor resting conditions when the jug is outside the fridge.

Build a refill routine around the water you use

Prepare smaller amounts more often if your household regularly leaves water standing. The largest reservoir is not always the most useful: buying extra capacity can create a larger amount to track, store and clean. Compare filtered capacity with the drinks and bottles you actually need, rather than using the total number printed on the box.

For example, two 500ml bottles need one litre. A compact jug with a stated 1.4-litre filtered reservoir can cover that nominal demand without filling a much larger dispenser. If several people need several litres at once, a larger jug or dispenser may be useful, provided the water is still used within the relevant storage instruction.

As a practical way to track freshness, finish or discard the remaining batch before adding a fresh one. Repeated topping up makes it difficult to know how long the oldest water has stood. If you transfer filtered water into another vessel, that vessel must also be clean, suitable for drinking water and covered; transfer does not restart the water’s age.

Pour from the jug rather than drinking directly from it. Keep the lid and spout clean and return the vessel to its chosen storage position promptly. If the routine breaks down during a busy week, reset the storage habit with fresh water and a clean jug, rather than relying on a cold temperature to compensate indefinitely.

When a smaller fridge jug would improve the routine

Keep a serviceable existing jug if it fits your fridge and your daily demand. A new vessel is worth considering only when storage or repeated excess capacity is a real problem. Marella Cool is one compact option with 1.4 litres filtered capacity and a published 10.5cm depth, but it still needs all three dimensions and the removal path checked.

The linked bundle includes Pure Performance cartridges. That pack detail does not determine how long you can store a prepared batch of water. For a scale-focused refill choice, use the hard-water guide; for another compact shape, compare the fridge-door options.

A larger vessel that fits securely can be appropriate for higher daily demand. The decision is capacity and access, not an assumption that one brand’s lid or filter makes stored water keep indefinitely.

Refrigeration does not replace cleaning or filter changes

Wash the body, funnel, lid and indicator using their permitted methods. A fridge does not remove residue from a spout or a lid, and installing a new cartridge does not clean the vessel. The component cleaning guide separates Memo lids, Smart Light and Flow from the parts that may go in a dishwasher.

Keep the installed filter on its actual service schedule, including a litre limit reached early. If the jug has been unused for a holiday or a longer break, follow the storage and restart guide. Cartridge storage during a break is a different question from leaving a jugful of water ready to drink.

For unexpected particles, changes at the tap or an official water-supply notice, follow the relevant manufacturer or supplier advice before using the jug again. Cold storage is not a method of treating unsafe water, and clear appearance alone cannot certify it. This guide concerns ordinary household storage within the system’s intended use.

If fridge space is the problem, compare a chilled dispenser with a fridge jug, including the cold reserve and recovery rather than just headline litres.

Common questions

Does BRITA say filtered water can stay in the fridge for a week?

The cited jug manual says to use it within 24 hours, and the current FAQ says within one day. Refrigeration does not extend that into a week.

Does the 0–5°C fridge range extend a filter’s water-storage limit?

No. That is general Food Standards Agency refrigerator guidance. The filter and vessel maker’s storage period still applies.

Can I top up old water with a fresh batch?

Finishing or discarding the old batch first makes its age easier to track. Adding fresh water does not make the older water new.

Does pouring it into a bottle restart the 24-hour period?

No. Transfer changes the container, not when the water was filtered. Use a clean suitable covered bottle and keep track of the original batch.

Is keeping a cartridge in the fridge during a holiday the same question?

No. An installed cartridge and a stored batch of drinking water have different care instructions. Use the brand-specific holiday guidance and retain the cartridge’s original age.
