How to descale a filtered hot-water dispenser: model-specific methods
Find the correct Aurora serial-code method, distinguish UKA vinegar from UKAVK citric-acid cycles, and separate original Cube hot rinsing from chemical descaling.

Match the appliance label before choosing a method
Filtered hot-water dispensers do not share one descaling recipe. The heater, seals, tank arrangement and programme can differ even within one range. Begin with the full appliance label and the manufacturer’s matching manual. For Aurora, Aqua Optima’s downloads page separates hot-and-cold instructions by FTN-UK, UKA, UKAV, UKAVI and UKAVK codes; hot-only and other appliances have their own documents.
The methods below summarise two specifically identified Aurora manuals. They are not permission to apply either mixture to every Aurora, a BRITA Cube, a kettle or a countertop RO system. If your controls or label do not match, stop and obtain the correct document before adding chemicals.
Use the Aurora version guide to identify the appliance family, or the original 4L Cube guide for its controls and ownership requirements. For a membrane appliance, use the separate countertop RO tank-cleaning guide rather than applying the heater procedures below.
| Exact manual | Prescribed solution | Rinse / distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Aurora FTN-UKA, Rev3 | 2L of 4–5% vinegar solution | 2L cold-water cycle; hot discharge around 60°C |
| Aurora FTN-UKAVK, Rev9 | At least 3L citric solution at 1g per 20ml water | 2L cold-water automatic rinse; hot discharge around 90°C |
| Original Cube 4L manual | No chemical dose prescribed | Defined hot-water cleaning programme |
Read the complete matching procedure, including preparation, controls and completion conditions. The solution, quantity, temperature and rinse form one method; taking a preferred part from each row creates a procedure the manufacturer has not specified.
Prepare the appliance and collection space
Allow the appliance to cool before removing its tank or handling wet parts, and follow the manual’s power instructions. For both cited Aurora descale procedures, empty the tank and remove the Evolve+ cartridge before starting. Keep the removed filter protected from the solution and from dirty worktop surfaces.
Aqua Optima Aurora hot-and-cold dispenser
A refillable hot-and-cold cartridge-filter dispenser, distinct from Aurora hot-only, chilled-only and coffee versions.
- Capacity / pack
- Advertised 3.8L total · 0.8L internal chilled reserve
- System / cartridge
- Evolve+
Good forHot drinks and chilled glasses from one appliance.
Watch forThe 3.8L listing is not 3.8L of immediately chilled water; it is not an RO system.
Choose it for portioned hot drinks and a small chilled reserve without RO plumbing. Identify the serial-label code before using any maintenance instructions.
Place a suitable receiving jug beneath the outlet and ensure you can safely manage the full discharge. The appliance may dispense hot acid solution. Keep hands clear, supervise the cycle and empty the collector only using the pause or stop behaviour specified for that version. A small drinking mug is not an adequate plan for several litres of maintenance discharge.
Do not mix descalers with other cleaning products, strengthen the prescribed solution or substitute a general bathroom product. Descaling residue is not drinking water. Keep the solution and all flushing discharge separate from water intended for drinks, and complete the prescribed rinse before returning the appliance to normal use.
Aurora FTN-UKA: the Rev3 vinegar programme
For the FTN-UKA label family mapped to ART_2713 Rev3, the manual specifies two litres of 4–5% vinegar solution. With the tank empty and filter removed, fill as directed and place the jug under the nozzle. Press and hold the descale symbol for three seconds to start its automatic programme.
The flashing symbol indicates the cycle is running. The manual warns that discharge is hot, around 60°C. When the tank is empty, refill with two litres of cold water and press the descale symbol again to run the cleaning cycle. Do not mistake the end of the acid stage for the end of the whole process.
The symbol should go out when the complete programme finishes. Reinstall the filter only after completion. The document explains that aborting the cycle can leave the indicator active; clearing a light by another control combination is not a substitute for rinsing. If the actual unit behaves differently, resolve the manual mismatch rather than guessing how to force it through.
Aqua Optima Evolve+ · 6 pack
The Evolve+ replacement family for compatible Aqua Optima jugs and dispensers. Check the device instructions and whether one cartridge or a pair is installed.
- Pack
- 6 cartridges
- Family
- Evolve+
- Limit
- 100L / 30 days
Good forMaintaining a confirmed compatible Aqua Optima device.
Watch forDevice instructions and paired systems can change the replacement calculation.
For a PerfectFit BRITA jug, check the compatibility key is included and follow Aqua Optima’s fit guidance. Do not assume any oval cartridge will work.
A fresh cartridge is appropriate when its own time or volume limit is reached, not simply because the heater needed descaling. Equally, descaling does not renew an exhausted cartridge. Maintain the Evolve+ replacement schedule separately and prepare a replacement using the appliance’s normal fitting instructions.
Aurora FTN-UKAVK: the Rev9 citric-acid programme
For the FTN-UKAVK family mapped to ART_2713 Rev9, the illuminated-warning procedure specifies no less than three litres of citric-acid solution at one gram of powder per 20ml of water. That stated ratio corresponds to 150g per three litres of water. This is the cited manual’s concentration for this identified procedure, not a universal appliance recipe.
With the tank empty and filter removed, prepare the specified solution, position the collector and hold the descale symbol for three seconds. The light flashes while the programme operates. Rev9 warns of discharge around 90°C, substantially hotter than the UKA example. Use the manual’s pause and resume instructions if the collection jug needs emptying.
When the tank empties and the light becomes constant, the automatic procedure calls for two litres of cold water and another press of the descale symbol. Let that cleaning cycle complete until the light goes out, then reinstall the filter. Retain the manual beside you throughout; do not reuse the spent solution or skip the rinse because it looks clear.
Rev9 also describes a separate manual descale when the warning is not illuminated, plus heater and chiller rinse prompts. These are distinct operations. Use the complete matching section for the displayed condition, and ask Aqua Optima if a quantity or instruction is unclear. Do not improvise a manual programme from the automatic sequence above.
Original Cube: distinguish hot cleaning from chemical descaling
The reviewed original BRITA Cube 4L manual describes an internal cleaning programme of roughly four to five minutes using 750ml. Ensure adequate water and a sufficiently large collector, then follow the manual’s control sequence. Its alternating discharge includes hot water, so keep the outlet clear and discard the collected water.
BRITA Cube 4L hot-and-ambient dispenser · white
The original four-litre Cube provides ambient water and four heated presets, using the MAXTRA PRO cartridge family.
- Capacity / pack
- 4L tank · no built-in chilling
- System / cartridge
- MAXTRA PRO; Limescale Expert recommended
Good forAmbient, 45°C, 65°C, 85°C and 95°C presets.
Watch for95°C is not a rolling boil; the original Cube has no chilled-water setting.
Choose it for portioned heated water when chilled dispensing is unnecessary. This white 4L listing is separate from Cube Cool and YOURCE appliances.
The manual recommends thorough internal cleaning at first use, monthly and after longer non-use, with an automatic three-month reminder. It does not prescribe the Aurora acid mixtures above. Persistent scale or reduced flow should be discussed with BRITA using the model and symptoms, rather than adding vinegar or citric acid on the assumption that every heater tolerates it.
BRITA MAXTRA PRO Limescale Expert · 6 pack
A MAXTRA PRO option for a hard-water kettle-scale priority, without changing a compatible jug or Flow dispenser.
- Pack
- 6 cartridges
- Family
- MAXTRA PRO
- Limit
- 150L / 4 weeks
Good forComparing a scale-focused refill for a compatible jug.
Watch forWater conditions can shorten the stated maximum life.
BRITA positions this type for hard to very hard water. It treats the water you filter through the jug; it does not soften the whole household supply.
Limescale Expert is BRITA’s recommended Cube cartridge, but using it does not remove the cleaning routine. Keep cartridge changes, removable-part washing, hot rinsing and any manufacturer-authorised scale treatment as separate records. If an appliance leaks, repeatedly faults or has damaged electrical parts, stop using it and arrange support; a stronger descale is not a repair.
Common questions
Should I leave the Aurora filter in while descaling?
The cited UKA and UKAVK procedures say to remove the filter before descaling and reinstall it after the complete process. Do not send their descaling solution through the cartridge.
Can I replace the specified acid with a stronger mix?
No. Follow the exact solution and quantity prescribed for your label code. Stronger mixtures and substitutions can damage parts or leave residues.
Why does the descale light stay on?
The Aurora manuals explain that an incomplete cycle may leave the reminder active. Complete the prescribed rinse; do not simply reset the light and assume the appliance is ready.
Can I use the Aurora vinegar method in Cube?
No. The current original Cube manual reviewed here does not prescribe that chemical recipe. Follow its hot-water cleaning instructions and ask BRITA about persistent scale.
What if the download does not match my buttons?
Stop and confirm the serial-code manual with the manufacturer. Similar names and housings do not establish identical controls or care methods.
