How to prepare and fit an Aqua Optima Evolve+ cartridge

Prepare Evolve+ with a 5–10-minute soak, one-minute rinse and two discarded fills. Match underside twist or supported BRITA fitting and check the PerfectFit key.

Confirm Evolve+ and the jug before opening the pack

This is the Evolve+ cartridge preparation method. Aqua Optima also has other filters and appliances, so check the exact family and the vessel’s instructions. A procedure for a chiller or another current cartridge version should not be treated as an identical fitting guide for every jug.

If the cartridge is going into an Aqua Optima jug, identify how its inner vessel holds the filter. The official Evolve+ leaflet illustrates an underside twist-lock connection for its own jug arrangement. For the listed supported BRITA/MAXTRA jug arrangement it shows a top insertion and push fit. The two directions are not alternatives to try randomly on one funnel.

PerfectFit needs an additional check. Aqua Optima’s current compatibility guidance describes a key for the relevant BRITA PerfectFit funnels. The older fitting leaflet alone does not establish universal compatibility. Confirm the jug, cartridge pack and any required key together before fitting; read our PerfectFit compatibility guide if uncertain.

Have a clean bowl, fresh cold drinking water and the supplied leaflet available. Remove the old cartridge before cleaning the permitted vessel parts, then keep the new cartridge away from detergents. A clean towel can provide a suitable resting surface while you prepare the components.

How to prepare and install a new Evolve+

  1. Unpack and inspect. Remove the cartridge packaging. Aqua Optima describes a small residue of black carbon in the bag or on the new cartridge as possible normal preparation residue. Visible damage or a questionable seal still needs a seller or maker check.
  2. Soak for 5–10 minutes. Place the cartridge in a bowl of water to release trapped air, following the supplied Evolve+ instructions. Use the cold drinking-water preparation appropriate to the jug.
  3. Rinse for one minute. Hold the cartridge under running water for the full preparation rinse. This is separate from the soak and from the later discarded jug fills.
  4. Fit using the vessel’s supported connection. For the underside arrangement illustrated for Aqua Optima jugs, attach beneath the inner vessel and turn clockwise to lock. For the supported BRITA arrangement, insert from above and press securely; follow the separate key instructions where PerfectFit requires it.
  5. Filter and discard two fills. Fill the inner vessel with cool water, let it filter and discard that water. Repeat once with a fresh fill. Fill a third time for normal use.
  6. Record the change. Set the vessel’s appropriate reminder after the actual fresh-cartridge change. Follow Evolve+ service limits, rather than the original limits of another brand’s cartridge.

The exact pack and jug instructions control. If the supplied fitting looks different from the leaflet’s illustration, stop and identify the model rather than forcing a twist or push fit. Use the manufacturer’s part illustrations to identify the correct connection.

Do not merge the timed rinse, two discarded fills and indicator reset into one step. A quick splash and a fresh display do not show that the media have been prepared according to the leaflet. Let the initial fills travel through the normal supported water path.

A cartridge being roughly oval or fitting inside the empty space does not establish that it seals correctly or lets water take the intended route. Never cut the funnel, remove a valve or alter a cartridge to imitate compatibility. Ask the manufacturer if the listed parts do not work together as instructed.

If a bundle advertises several months of filters, confirm what is physically included. Cartridge count and key inclusion are different details. Keep the pack leaflet and any reusable compatibility accessory identified so it is available for the next change.

What if water is still slow or specks remain?

For slow or blocked flow, Aqua Optima’s FAQ describes removing its filter, shaking vigorously to redistribute media, briefly rinsing under cold water and refitting. This is a cartridge-specific troubleshooting procedure, separate from the full new-filter soak and one-minute rinse above. Our slow-flow guide explains the distinction.

Manufacturer-described loose carbon residue should be addressed by the correct preparation. Continued unexplained particles or visible damage should be referred to the maker rather than dismissed automatically as harmless carbon. If the unfiltered supply also contains particles or has changed unexpectedly, contact your water supplier; see the black-specks guide for the source checks.

Do not open the sealed cartridge or use boiling water, pressure or extra holes to make it drain. A fresh refill that remains faulty after correct supported preparation may warrant a seller or manufacturer remedy, rather than repeated purchases.

Keep Evolve+ on its own replacement schedule

The Evolve+ product specification gives a maximum of 100 litres or 30 days, using the earlier limit and following any earlier instruction for the water conditions. The leaflet describes 100 litres as roughly four weeks of typical use; your actual consumption can reach the litre figure sooner.

At four litres daily, 100 litres is reached in 25 days. A compatible BRITA vessel does not transfer a MAXTRA PRO rating of 150 litres to the installed Evolve+ media. Set the reminder and household record around the cartridge actually used. The replacement-frequency guide compares these schedules.

Store prepared water according to the vessel and cartridge guidance, clean the container on its own routine and keep unopened spares identifiable in their packaging. The recycling guide explains the current UK options for removed Evolve+ cartridges, including the changed access to TerraCycle’s programme.

Common questions

How long should Evolve+ soak before first use?

The Evolve+ leaflet specifies 5–10 minutes in water to release air, followed by a separate one-minute rinse under running water.

Do I discard two fills after fitting?

The cited leaflet says to filter and discard two inner-vessel fills, then fill a third time for use. Follow any exact model instructions supplied with your pack.

Do all Aqua Optima and BRITA jugs use the same fitting motion?

No. The leaflet shows an underside clockwise lock for its Aqua Optima arrangement and top insertion for the listed BRITA arrangement. PerfectFit can also require a compatibility key.

Can I use MAXTRA PRO’s 150-litre limit for Evolve+?

No. Use the installed Evolve+ cartridge’s own maximum of 100 litres or 30 days, with any earlier replacement instruction that applies.

Is the brief troubleshooting rinse the full preparation?

No. Aqua Optima’s slow-flow advice is separate from the new cartridge’s timed soak, one-minute rinse and initial discarded fills.
