BRITA Flow buying guide: capacity, shelf space and replacement filters

Check BRITA Flow’s 5.2-litre filtered capacity, 30.4 × 21.4cm footprint, filling access and tap clearance, plus MAXTRA PRO replacement costs.

An unbranded dispenser on a refrigerator shelf

BRITA Flow: who is the larger reservoir for?

Flow is a tap dispenser for homes that want more filtered water available in one place. Its main advantage over a compact jug is stored filtered capacity. You bring a glass or bottle to the tap instead of lifting the whole vessel for every pour. It remains a gravity-fed container that needs refilling and cleaning; it is not a plumbed-in supply.

The two capacity figures need to stay separate. 5.2 litres is BRITA’s stated filtered reservoir. 8.2 litres is total capacity, including the space where water waits above the cartridge. The larger number should not be used to promise eight litres immediately available for bottles. Nor does that larger tank establish a faster filtration rate.

A dispensing tank to consider when several people pour from the same place. Its larger reservoir offers more filtered water between refills than the jugs in our shortlist.

Watch forShelf space, full weight and access for cleaning.

Check a stable shelf, room above the sliding lid and space below the dispensing tap. A larger tank still uses a MAXTRA PRO cartridge with its own replacement limit.

A shared household filling several bottles in one session may value the reserve. Someone taking one or two glasses through the day may prefer the easier handling and smaller footprint of a jug. Compare large jugs vs dispensers if you are still deciding on the format.

The linked Flow bundle’s selected contents should be checked at checkout. A model can be offered with different cartridge counts, and the first-purchase value depends partly on what is inside the box. We do not publish a fixed live price or stock claim.

These measurements describe the dispenser body, not the entire space needed to use it. Place a bottle of the size you normally fill in the intended serving position. Consider how it will sit under the tap, how you will operate the lever and whether you can see the water level without awkward reaching. We do not supply an invented tap-height clearance figure.

For fridge storage, check the shelf’s usable width and depth after allowing for door closure and surrounding food. Make sure the surface can support the filled load under the fridge manufacturer’s guidance. The tap needs to remain accessible without leaving the tank insecurely overhanging the shelf.

You also need a filling plan. The sliding lid can help with access, but a shelf directly above the tank may still obstruct refilling. Consider how you will carry or replenish water and remove the vessel for washing. A location that works when empty can become impractical once several litres and the container’s own weight are involved.

Understand the water load before choosing a position

At approximately one kilogram per litre, 5.2 litres of water alone weighs about 5.2kg. That excludes the vessel, cartridge and any water in the upper reservoir. Adding unfiltered water above the cartridge increases the load further.

A tap reduces repeated lifting during serving, but does not eliminate the need to handle the container. Think about sink height, access through a crowded kitchen and whether another person can help if needed. Do not use capacity figures as proof that the filled product will be manageable for a particular person.

The same judgement applies to cleaning. A larger vessel needs enough room to reach its surfaces and parts as instructed. Choose a stable, accessible location first, then confirm that the dispenser can be moved to and from it without a strained grip or an obstructed path.

Which cartridge does Flow use?

The current Flow model uses MAXTRA PRO. Pure Performance is the everyday-purpose option; Limescale Expert is positioned for a harder-water scale priority. The cartridge family and the cartridge purpose are separate checks. A Flow does not take BRITA Classic, MicroDisc or an ON TAP cartridge just because all carry the BRITA name.

For scale-focused buying, compare the two MAXTRA PRO purposes. A Flow bundle supplied with Pure Performance should not be presented as already including Limescale Expert. If choosing the latter separately, confirm the exact pack wording and selected variant; the linked listing has mixed title wording but its authorised image identifies Limescale Expert.

Watch forWater conditions can shorten the stated maximum life.

BRITA positions this type for hard to very hard water. It treats the water you filter through the jug; it does not soften the whole household supply.

Flow’s Memo is a replacement reminder. It does not directly test the water or measure all remaining cartridge capacity. The MAXTRA PRO time and volume instructions still apply, including earlier changes where the pack or conditions require them. Reset the reminder after fitting a fresh cartridge, not as a way of extending an old one.

Budget for litres used, then keep the tank clean

The stated MAXTRA PRO maximum is 150 litres or four weeks. At eight litres daily, 150 litres is reached after 18.75 days. That example explains why a busy household can need more than one cartridge per four-week period, even though the tank itself holds much more than a compact jug.

For a deliberately invented £30 six-pack, an eight-litre daily estimate gives an annualised cartridge cost of about £97.33. It is a calculation at a hypothetical price, not an offer or a prediction that the cartridge will always deliver its maximum rating. Whole packs affect cash paid, and water conditions can bring replacement forward. Enter your own pack and consumption figures in the running-cost calculator.

Follow Flow’s current care instructions; BRITA describes cleaning with cold or warm water and a sponge. Do not transfer another jug’s dishwasher permission to every Flow component. Pay attention to the tap, lid and other accessible surfaces as directed, and keep a regular washing routine alongside cartridge replacement.

If the household’s daily demand makes gravity refilling a persistent chore, read our tap and under-sink starting point. A plumbed option has its own fitting, pressure and maintenance requirements, but may answer a demand problem that a still larger reservoir cannot.

For the upkeep routine, read the Flow and jug cleaning distinctions and when to replace the cartridge.

Questions before you buy

What is the BRITA Flow filtered capacity?

BRITA states 5.2 litres filtered within 8.2 litres total. The upper reservoir is included in total volume and is not all immediately ready to serve.

What are its dimensions?

The current UK specification gives 30.4cm width, 22cm height and 21.4cm depth. Plan additional working space for the fill opening, tap and drinking vessel.

Does Flow chill water?

It has no powered cooling function. Refrigerated water depends on storing the dispenser in a suitable fridge location; the vessel itself does not actively cool the supply.

Will one MAXTRA PRO last longer in Flow?

No. The cartridge keeps its own time and volume limits. Higher household consumption can reach the litre limit before four weeks.

Can I wash all of Flow in the dishwasher?

Do not assume that. Follow the current Flow-specific care instructions and distinguish them from dishwasher permissions for other BRITA jug models.
