BWT Penguin water filter jug: capacity, cartridges and everyday use
Check the BWT Penguin’s 1.5L filtered capacity, 2.7L total volume, shelf dimensions, cartridge format, indicator versions and replacement costs.

BWT Penguin capacity: 1.5 litres ready filtered, 2.7 litres total
The Penguin’s headline 2.7-litre figure describes total capacity. BWT gives 1.5 litres for filtered water. That lower figure is the useful starting point when deciding whether a morning’s bottle filling and kettle use will require another cycle. It prevents a common mistake: buying a jug as though every litre named on the box were ready to pour.
Two 500ml bottles need one litre; two 750ml bottles use the nominal 1.5-litre filtered reservoir. Adding a kettle fill then means treating more water. These serving calculations use the published filtered capacity. Allow for the instructions and practical usable level of the exact jug.

The dimensions come from BWT’s Penguin specification. Confirm them for the colour and version offered, particularly when a listing combines several models. Do not use a product photograph to estimate shelf fit or assume that every BWT jug shares the Penguin’s shape.
Measure the fridge and think about carrying
Measure the narrowest usable width and depth of the fridge shelf, including the retaining lip, door curvature and any fixed bottle dividers. Then allow enough height to lift the jug out. A jug can fit when stationary but still be awkward to remove if its lid nearly touches the shelf above.
Keep the handle and spout within your measurement. The narrow body dimension alone does not describe the total space the jug occupies. Our fridge-door measuring guide includes the sequence for checking storage and movement rather than relying on “fridge friendly” wording.
Water adds roughly one kilogram per litre before the jug and cartridge. Consider who will refill it and whether it will be carried full between sink and fridge. A larger reservoir is helpful only when it remains comfortable to use. If repeated lifting is the problem, a stationary dispenser may be a better format.
Also leave space for washing the body and funnel. Removable parts make cleaning possible, but a narrow sink, crowded draining board or inconvenient fridge position can turn a routine task into an irritation. Capacity is one part of ownership, not a reason to ignore access.
Choose the cartridge for this jug and your water concern
The sealed BWT Longlife Mg2+ oval cartridge is a relevant replacement format for an appropriately matched Penguin. BWT describes its magnesium-style media as reducing substances affecting taste and limescale while altering the mineral balance. That is not the same treatment objective as producing very low-TDS deionised water.
BWT Longlife Mg2+ cartridges, 3+1 pack
Four sealed BWT magnesium-style jug cartridges, with a rated maximum of 120 litres under stated conditions and a four-week limit.

- 4 sealed cartridges

- Up to 120L / 4 weeks
Good forA confirmed BWT oval-cartridge jug.
Watch forNot the reusable shell; life depends on conditions.
Match the BWT jug and oval format before choosing this pack; these sealed cartridges are not the reusable refill shell.
Do not assume a higher or lower TDS reading proves whether the magnesium cartridge is performing correctly. A conductivity-derived meter cannot isolate scale-forming hardness or verify chlorine reduction. Use the instructions and replacement limits, with your supplier’s hardness information where relevant.
BWT also sells a purpose-made reusable cartridge with refill doses. It is a separate format, not permission to cut open the sealed Longlife cartridge. Check the exact jug fit, shell and approved dose before changing systems. Our BWT compatibility guide explains sealed, older round and reusable formats.
The 120-litre rating is conditional. Different BWT documents describe particular hardness conditions, and total hardness and carbonate hardness are not interchangeable labels. Do not treat the rating as guaranteed life in every UK water supply or extend use past the stated four-week maximum because less than 120 litres has been filtered.
Everyday use: preparation, cleaning and the indicator
Use the Penguin with the potable tap water specified in its manual. Clean the jug before first use and follow the preparation routine for the supplied cartridge. BWT’s sealed-cartridge manual includes soaking the cartridge before fitting. That does not make it the correct preparation routine for every refill product or another brand.
Separate body, funnel and lid care. The manual distinguishes the washable jug components from the lid and its indicator; do not put the electronic lid into a dishwasher because the body can be washed there. Use the cleaning method and temperature limits applicable to the exact version.
BWT documents more than one Easy-Control arrangement. Some indicators account for fillings; other versions use a time-based arrangement. A filling count is not a direct dissolved-contaminant reading, and a reset does not restore exhausted media. Identify your own control before borrowing a reset sequence from a different Penguin photograph.
Keep filtered water cool and protected from contamination, and clean the vessel routinely. If the jug will stand unused during a holiday, follow its storage and restart instructions. Our filtered-water storage guide provides the broader habits, while the BWT manual remains the reference for model-specific steps.
What does the Penguin cost to own?
Compare the jug price and included filters separately from the replacement pack. The linked 3+1 cartridge listing contains four sealed cartridges. It does not automatically establish four calendar months, because four weeks is shorter than most months and the volume limit may arrive earlier.
Divide the delivered replacement-pack price by four to obtain cost per cartridge. At low use, a four-week schedule corresponds to roughly 13 cartridge-equivalents per year before whole-pack rounding. Higher use or harder conditions may require more. Use our running-cost calculator with the instructions for the exact cartridge.
Choose the Penguin when its serving size, grip, storage footprint and BWT replacement route suit your routine. If you mainly want to compare cartridge purposes and costs against an alternative, read BWT vs BRITA. Check reduction claims for the exact cartridge rather than extending unrelated BWT marketing to the Penguin.
Common questions
Is the BWT Penguin a 2.7-litre filtered jug?
No. BWT specifies 2.7 litres total and 1.5 litres filtered. The upper hopper and lower reservoir serve different purposes.
How often should I replace its cartridge?
The BWT oval magnesium cartridge instructions use a maximum of four weeks, with a 120-litre rating under stated hardness conditions. Follow the exact pack and replace sooner when its limits or conditions require it.
Does every Penguin have the same indicator?
No. BWT documents different Easy-Control arrangements. Identify the control on your own lid before following a reset or interpreting its display.
Can I refill an ordinary sealed BWT cartridge?
No. BWT’s purpose-made reusable cartridge is a separate product. A sealed Longlife cartridge should not be opened and refilled with loose media.
Will the Penguin fit any fridge door?
No. Compare overall dimensions and handle clearance with the narrowest usable space, and confirm the exact version being sold.
