How to clean a stainless-steel gravity filter: chambers, tap and seals

Clean British Berkefeld steel chambers, tap fittings and seals while protecting the ceramic candles and filtered outlet. Includes reassembly and post-clean flushing.

Prepare a clean area and empty both chambers first

Cleaning a gravity filter means looking after the storage and dispensing parts as well as the candles. Water that has already passed through the ceramic can still be exposed to a dirty lower chamber, tap outlet or handling surface. Keep the clean-side water path in mind throughout the job.

Allow the unit to be emptied safely, close the tap as appropriate and move only the empty parts. A large vessel containing water is awkward to dismantle and can spill into the area where you intend to keep cleaned components. Do not attempt to loosen an internal tap nut while the lower chamber is full.

Wash and dry your hands, clear the sink area and prepare a clean surface for loose parts. Remove the upper chamber and take out its candles according to the manual. Set them aside so the plastic outlet and threaded mount remain clean and do not touch dirty sink water.

If the ceramic surface also needs attention, use the separate candle-cleaning procedure. Do not leave candles in place during the housing’s soapy wash, even when the steel parts and ceramic both appear to need cleaning.

Wash the chambers and lid using the housing routine

British Berkefeld’s system instructions call for washing the metal and appropriate plastic parts with hot soapy water, rinsing with clean water and drying before assembly. This applies to the housing and its fittings with the candles removed; it is not an instruction to pass hot soapy water through the filter media.

Use a clean cloth or suitable non-scratching cleaning tool for the steel. Work around rims and contact surfaces as well as the broad chamber walls. Rinse thoroughly so washing-up residue is not left in the storage tank or tap path, then dry with a clean method.

Do not assume every component is dishwasher-safe because the body is stainless steel. Follow the cited hand-washing routine and the exact tap’s instructions. Avoid introducing an improvised descaling or sanitising recipe into the assembled system; different parts and media have different restrictions.

A suspected contamination event may require more than an ordinary wash. Keep the system out of use and obtain model-specific advice rather than masking an unusual smell or repeatedly cleaning until the water tastes normal. A visual check alone cannot verify that drinking water is suitable.

Clean and inspect the dispensing tap and seals

With the lower chamber empty, remove the tap as directed and keep track of the nut, washers and their positions. The standard SS2 arrangement uses a seal on each side of the chamber wall; a different steel tap can have its own fittings. Do not merge parts from two assemblies because their threads seem similar.

Look for trapped dirt, a folded or displaced washer, split rubber, damaged threads or a loose body. Clean only the parts intended to be dismantled. Do not force open a sealed valve mechanism or scrape a seat with a tool when the manufacturer provides no such servicing procedure.

The named British Berkefeld replacement tap is relevant if the original is damaged or needs replacement after diagnosis. It is specified for the 6L, 8.5L and 12L vessels. Check the selected kit’s supplied fittings and instructions; a new tap does not automatically correct an overfilled lower tank or a missing candle washer.

Keep the dispensing outlet clean during reassembly. A cloth used to wipe untreated-water spills should not then wipe the outlet or the lower chamber interior. The distinction between feed-side and filtered-side handling matters more than polishing the exterior to a particular shine.

Reassemble, check the seals and discard the prescribed water

Reinstall the correct tap fittings in their documented order, without excessive force. Refit candle washers and wing nuts and ensure unused positions have their proper blanking components. Check that the top chamber is stable and that no loose part can fall into the lower reservoir.

If the same cleaned candles are being refitted, the manual specifies allowing one litre per candle to run to waste. For a two-candle system that is at least two litres. If fitting new candles instead, use the full new-filter preparation sequence, not merely the post-clean discard amount.

Observe the vessel during the first refill and tap use. A dry exterior before filling provides a useful reference for locating seepage. If water appears at the nesting joint, check lower-tank space before assuming the joint needs a seal or stronger tightening.

Resume serving only when the correct parts, preparation and ordinary operation are established. Follow leak and overflow diagnosis if wet patches persist, or slow-flow checks if the tank replenishes unusually slowly.

Cleaning does not reset replacement life

Chamber cleaning removes deposits and residues from the container; candle surface cleaning can restore flow. Neither action renews the internal media. Retain the original start month, use record and applicable service limits when deciding whether a candle is due.

Choose for the confirmed gravity housing and same-grade configuration. Cleaning may restore flow but does not reset the replacement schedule.

The Ultra Sterasyl pair shown here is for a confirmed compatible same-grade installation when replacement is due or damage makes a candle unsuitable. It is not a consumable that must be purchased every time the housing is washed. Keep the exact grade if your system uses Ultra Fluoride instead.

Replace damaged seals or fittings with the specified parts rather than adding improvised spacers or sealant. If a part cannot be identified, use the Doulton directory and manufacturer support. A maintained existing vessel often needs a correctly matched part, not an entirely new system.

Common questions

Can I wash the whole assembled filter in soapy water?

No. Remove the ceramic candles first. The housing and approved loose fittings have a separate wash routine; soap or detergent must not be used on the ceramic.

Should I put the steel chambers in the dishwasher?

Use the hand-washing routine in the cited system instructions rather than assuming dishwasher suitability for every vessel, tap and seal.

How often should I clean the housing?

The manual calls for periodic cleaning and cleaning when candles are cleaned or replaced. Follow the exact model guidance and clean sooner after contamination, spills or unsuitable storage conditions.

How much water should I discard after refitting cleaned candles?

The system instructions specify one litre per refitted cleaned candle. Two candles therefore mean at least two litres to waste before ordinary serving resumes.

Does a leaking tap mean I need a new gravity filter?

Not automatically. Empty the system, identify whether the leak is at the outlet or the chamber fitting, and check the correct seals and assembly. Replace a damaged matched part when needed rather than the whole vessel by default.
