BRITA Classic cartridge compatibility guide
Identify Classic-compatible BRITA jugs and appliances, avoid MAXTRA mix-ups and compare the correct replacement cartridge pack.

Find Classic in the manual or on the old pack
Classic is the replacement route for existing equipment that specifies the Classic cartridge format. The fact that a jug is old, has a blue lid or carries a BRITA logo does not identify the refill conclusively. Look for the model and the cartridge reference together, and keep a photograph of both before shopping.
BRITA’s UK Classic specification names Classic jugs and kettles, plus compatible partner appliances. It tells owners to look for the Classic cartridge symbol in the instruction manual. That is a more precise check than the general wording used to promote the current jug range.
A Classic cartridge is a different shape and connection from an oval MAXTRA cartridge. MAXTRA PRO is not an upgrade that can be pushed into a Classic well. MicroDisc is a disc for other devices, and ON TAP refills belong in their specified tap-filter housings. Use the family directory if the old name is missing or uncertain.
| Evidence | Useful conclusion | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Manual names Classic | The family is identified | Match the exact replacement and preparation instructions |
| Old cartridge marked Classic | A useful match to the existing setup | Cross-check the device model and condition |
| Only the BRITA logo is visible | Family still uncertain | Find the model or ask BRITA |
| Appliance takes a cartridge | Not enough information | Read that appliance’s own refill specification |
Choose a replacement for the equipment you own
The three-pack below is a refill purchase for a confirmed Classic system. It does not include a new jug. Check the current selected pack count and seller on Amazon, especially if the listing offers several quantities or a visually similar compatible-brand alternative.
BRITA Classic · 3 pack
A replacement pack for an existing Classic-format jug. Keep the older container in service only after confirming Classic is the family named in its instructions.

Watch forThe BRITA name alone does not establish fit.
For Classic-compatible equipment only. It does not replace an oval MAXTRA cartridge, a MicroDisc or an ON TAP refill.
Classic combines filtration materials intended to address taste and limescale within its specified use. The purchase decision here is primarily compatibility and continued support, rather than a claim that an older format is better or worse than every newer one. A rated claim for one cartridge family does not automatically apply to another.
If you are considering a compatible-brand Classic refill, look for your exact equipment in that maker’s fit guidance. A broad reference to older jugs is not enough for a kettle or partner appliance. The original versus compatible buying guide explains how to assess the instructions, identity and running costs separately.
Compare pack value on a four-week basis
BRITA describes a Classic cartridge as lasting around four weeks. Three cartridges therefore represent up to 12 weeks under that schedule, rather than a guarantee of three full calendar months. Higher use or the exact pack’s conditions may require earlier changes.
Divide the delivered price by three when comparing this pack with another three-pack. For an annual estimate, use the calculator’s custom settings with the limits stated on your pack. Do not enter MAXTRA PRO’s 150-litre allowance simply because the calculator opens with that family selected.
Prepare the actual cartridge you buy
Older instructions, revised packaging and separately branded refills may not describe the same preparation method. Read the directions supplied with the new cartridge, and use the equipment manual for assembly and cleaning. Remove loose packaging before installation and check the normal seating arrangement; do not improvise a fit by trimming or packing around it.
Keep the original pack until you know the replacement is correct. It provides a useful record of the product name, quantity and manufacturer instructions for the next order. Once fitted, note the date and set a reminder that works independently of whether the jug’s old indicator still functions.
When keeping the jug makes sense
A cartridge change is only one part of keeping older equipment usable. Inspect the container, funnel, lid and any seals for damage and check that they can still be cleaned as directed. A cracked body, missing funnel or lid that does not fit properly calls for a parts decision as well as a filter purchase.
If the jug is sound and the correct cartridges remain obtainable, there is no need to replace it simply to adopt the newest cartridge name. Conversely, buying a large stock of refills for damaged equipment can postpone a decision that you already need to make. Compare the whole next year of ownership, including any missing parts, rather than the cartridge pack alone.
If identification remains uncertain, send the manufacturer the model and photographs of the old cartridge and funnel. Avoid guessing from a marketplace title or experimenting with a press-fit substitute. A confirmed refill keeps a useful container working; a plausible-looking mismatch can waste both the pack and the time spent troubleshooting it.
If you do decide to change systems, the jug buying guide compares current options by filtered capacity and dimensions. Choose the container for your household and its replacement supply together, rather than assuming the newest cartridge family requires the largest jug.
Questions before you buy
Will MAXTRA PRO replace a Classic cartridge?
No. Classic is a separate cartridge format. Check the Classic symbol or cartridge name in the equipment instructions rather than applying broad current-jug advertising to an older Classic system.
Can Classic cartridges fit kettles?
BRITA describes Classic use in compatible Classic jugs, kettles and specified partner appliances. The appliance manual must explicitly name Classic; that does not mean any filter kettle accepts it.
Do I need a new jug because mine uses Classic?
Not automatically. If the correct refill is available and the container, funnel and seals are sound, a replacement cartridge may be enough. Damage, missing parts or uncertain identification need resolving before continued use.
How often should a Classic cartridge be changed?
BRITA’s Classic specification gives around four weeks per cartridge. Follow the instructions for the exact pack and equipment, including any conditions that require earlier replacement. Do not borrow MAXTRA PRO’s 150-litre rating.
Does a three-pack guarantee three calendar months?
No. Three four-week intervals represent 12 weeks. Actual service life and household use can shorten that, and calendar months are not all four weeks long.
