BRITA MicroDisc vs MAXTRA PRO

Compare MicroDisc and MAXTRA PRO by device compatibility, hardness reduction, replacement limits and refill costs. They are not interchangeable.

MicroDisc and MAXTRA PRO belong to different devices

MicroDisc is a compact disc held in the cap or filter assembly of a compatible BRITA bottle or carafe. MAXTRA PRO is the larger cartridge used in compatible MAXTRA-family jug funnels and dispensers. They are not two quality grades that fit into the same holder.

That distinction settles most replacement purchases. If you own a Marella with a MAXTRA funnel, buy the correct MAXTRA-family refill. If the instructions for your bottle specify MicroDisc, choose a MicroDisc refill. A product carrying the BRITA name can still use another system, so keep the device’s full name rather than shopping by brand alone.

Buy MicroDisc for an existing compatible device

The refill pack below keeps a suitable bottle or carafe in service without replacing the container. It is not a purchase recommendation for a MAXTRA jug. Confirm the selected pack count, since a manufacturer’s six-pack specification and an Amazon three-pack listing describe different quantities even when the refill family is the same.

Why retaining minerals matters to the choice

The MicroDisc specification says calcium and magnesium remain in the water. That is consistent with its role as a convenient taste-focused option for a compatible bottle or carafe. It means you should not expect the disc to behave like a jug cartridge selected for carbonate-hardness reduction.

MAXTRA PRO combines activated carbon with ion-exchange material. Within that family, the two named types have different priorities. Selecting the cartridge involves the intended reduction and your water conditions; it is not simply a contest between a small disc and a larger housing.

Avoid using taste, a low meter reading or the appearance of the filtered water as a universal performance test. If you need evidence about a named substance, inspect the exact cartridge’s documented claim and conditions. Neither format should be treated as permission to disregard a water supplier’s advice about a supply incident.

Everyday convenience is also different

A bottle filters water in the way its cap and drinking system are designed to work. A gravity carafe or jug filters before you pour. Think about whether you want water at a desk, for a journey, for several glasses at home or for filling a kettle. The container and use pattern matter as much as the refill price.

The same MicroDisc has a different stated volume in a bottle and carafe because the filtering conditions differ. Do not carry a 150-litre carafe figure into a bottle budget. Similarly, do not assume that several people sharing a jug use the same daily amount as one person carrying a bottle.

Compare replacement routines with the right figures

Use the earlier of the time or volume limit, and follow any stricter device instructions. For a bottle using two litres daily, a 60-litre allowance represents 30 days; the four-week time limit arrives first. At three litres daily, the same volume represents 20 days. These are arithmetic examples, not promises of actual service life.

The running-cost calculator can model MicroDisc using custom settings: enter 28 days and the correct device volume. Use the number of discs in the pack as the count. For MAXTRA PRO, its default setting is a starting point, but water conditions can call for earlier replacement.

Keep preparation instructions with the device

A disc and a jug cartridge are prepared differently. Use the relevant bottle or carafe manual for initial rinsing, handling and regular cleaning. Do not apply a generic jug soak or cleaning method to every filter format. A container that can be washed does not establish that its filter can go through the same process.

For a household using both formats, label spare stock by device and record the fitting date for each. Two products with a four-week reminder still need separate records when they were fitted on different days. The compatibility directory is useful when several refill families share the same cupboard.

Questions before you buy

Can a MicroDisc go in a Marella jug?

No. A Marella using the MAXTRA family takes the appropriate cartridge, not a MicroDisc. The disc needs a device specifically designed to hold and filter through it.

Does MicroDisc reduce kettle scale like MAXTRA PRO?

MicroDisc is designed to let calcium and magnesium remain in the water. If reducing carbonate-hardness-related scale is your aim, investigate a cartridge designed for that purpose rather than selecting the disc for its compact size.

Does every MicroDisc last 150 litres?

The BRITA specification distinguishes up to 60 litres in a filter bottle from up to 150 litres in a compatible carafe. A four-week time limit also applies. Use the figure for your actual device.

Are the bottle and carafe discs different sizes?

The product specification describes MicroDisc use across compatible bottles and carafes, but the device changes the filtering conditions and volume limit. Check that the device explicitly takes MicroDisc; do not extend that to other BRITA bottle ranges.

Which is cheaper to keep supplied?

It depends on the current refill price, device and consumption. Use the correct pack count and limits. Comparing only the headline litres can make a low-use jug or a bottle appear cheaper than its actual replacement routine.
