BRITA MAXTRA+ vs MAXTRA PRO
Can MAXTRA PRO replace MAXTRA+? Compare jug compatibility, cartridge types, litre ratings and the four-week change schedule.

Check that your jug belongs to the MAXTRA family
If your existing instructions specify MAXTRA+, the first question is whether the new cartridge is the appropriate successor, not whether you need a new container. BRITA’s generation guidance explains the change to MAXTRA PRO. Keep the jug model and cartridge name together when shopping, especially if the old manual uses a name no longer prominent on current packs.
“An old BRITA jug” is not a sufficiently precise description. The MAXTRA family and Classic family are separate. A bottle that takes MicroDisc is another system again. If the old refill is a tall Classic-format cartridge rather than an oval MAXTRA type, start with the Classic replacement guide instead.
For a third-party refill, check that manufacturer’s own current fit list. A cartridge sold as compatible with MAXTRA+ may have an additional requirement for a PerfectFit funnel. The Evolve+ key guide covers one example; it is not a blanket approval of every oval compatible cartridge.
What changes between MAXTRA+ and MAXTRA PRO?
BRITA’s FAQ describes MAXTRA PRO as an updated generation with additional mesh and an increase in the stated rated volume from 100 to 150 litres. Those are manufacturer specifications for the named cartridge generation. Older manuals can describe different water-condition assumptions, so follow the instructions on the actual cartridge pack you use.
| Check | MAXTRA+ | MAXTRA PRO |
|---|---|---|
| Place in the range | Earlier MAXTRA generation | Successor for compatible MAXTRA-family devices |
| Headline comparison in BRITA FAQ | 100-litre reference rating | 150-litre maximum rating |
| Time schedule | At least every four weeks | At least every four weeks |
| Purchase decision | Confirm the actual older pack’s instructions | Choose the named type and correct pack |
The higher volume can matter in a household that reaches the litre limit before four weeks. It makes less difference to the planned replacement interval when daily consumption is low. At two litres a day, 28 days represents 56 litres; the calendar limit arrives first for either headline rating. At six litres a day, 150 litres is reached in 25 days. The same cartridge can therefore have a different practical replacement pattern in different homes.
Two purposes within MAXTRA PRO
Pure Performance and Limescale Expert are options within the PRO family. If your old pack simply said MAXTRA+, do not assume the replacement shopping decision is settled by the letters PRO. Decide whether everyday taste or hard-water appliance scale is your main priority, then read the exact cartridge specification.

Watch forWater conditions can shorten the stated maximum life.
BRITA positions this type for hard to very hard water. It treats the water you filter through the jug; it does not soften the whole household supply.
The Pure Performance versus Limescale Expert comparison explains the purpose distinction in more detail. Neither type changes the dimensions of the jug or creates extra space in a fridge door. A cartridge upgrade and a container-size decision solve different problems.
Changing over without buying unnecessary equipment
- Find the model name and MAXTRA-family reference in the jug instructions.
- Confirm the new pack says MAXTRA PRO and identifies the type you want.
- Clean the jug components according to their individual instructions.
- Prepare and seat the new cartridge using its own pack directions.
- Set the appropriate replacement reminder and record the new fitting date.
A new cartridge should not require cutting plastic, bypassing a funnel feature or forcing the lid. If it does not seat, check whether it is actually the right family and whether it has been prepared correctly. Do not interpret an obstruction as evidence that every older jug needs replacing.
Existing cupboard stock and multipacks
Keep older sealed cartridges in their original packaging so the identity and instructions remain available. Follow the stated storage conditions, and inspect seals before use. An unopened refill is not automatically unsuitable because the range has changed, but a damaged or unidentified pack is not a good basis for a household drinking-water purchase.
Compare current pack prices using the running-cost calculator. For an older MAXTRA+ pack, select custom limits and enter the figures from that pack instead of using MAXTRA PRO defaults. This keeps a lower purchase price from hiding a different replacement schedule.
For a fresh MAXTRA PRO, follow the complete preparation and fitting steps, then set the actual replacement reminder.
Questions before you buy
Can MAXTRA PRO replace MAXTRA+ in my existing jug?
BRITA describes MAXTRA PRO as the successor compatible with MAXTRA+ products. Confirm that your equipment specifies the MAXTRA family. A Classic cartridge well, MicroDisc holder or ON TAP housing is not that format.
Can I use MAXTRA PRO for six weeks because it filters more litres?
No. BRITA retains the four-week maximum time schedule. The volume allowance and time limit operate together; the earlier limit governs, with water conditions potentially shortening life.
Does MAXTRA+ mean the same as Classic?
No. MAXTRA+ is an oval MAXTRA-family cartridge. Classic is a different cartridge format used in separate older equipment. The age of a jug is less useful than its exact family name.
Should I throw away unopened MAXTRA+ cartridges?
Do not discard them solely because a newer generation exists. Check the pack’s storage guidance, condition, device compatibility and service-life instructions. Do not apply MAXTRA PRO’s rated litres to an older MAXTRA+ refill.
Which MAXTRA PRO type should I buy first?
Pure Performance is the everyday comparison point; Limescale Expert is intended for a stronger scale priority. Choose after confirming fit and considering your water and current pack prices, rather than treating the newer generation as one universal specification.
